No possibility of getting a furlough before they leave. He wants Sarah to go to New York as soon as possible. He has been informed that the next week they leave for Fortress Monroe or beyond. He plans to see the acting Brigadier General to see if he will be granted a pass to go to New York.
[Camp Buckingham, LI, NY] November 22 1862
Dear Wife.
the orders this morning are that there is no possibility of getting a pass of[ f] the ground anywhere before we leave here. this morning I got a furlough from the fife major and went to the Col for him to sign it and he said the orders were not to grant any passes to any one so that I could not come home as I intended. now I want you to start for N. York just as soon as you can after you get this with your Babie. you must buy a shawl if you have not done so and a white Bonnet or you can get one in N. York. and stop to your Cousins. and you will have to come over to the Camp or send me word that you are in N. York. the probability is that we shall leave the middle of next week for fortress Monroe so that you will have to leave the children with Amos and come with Fannie. I donot know as I can get a pass to the city when you come but I am going to see the acting Brigadier General and see if I cannot get him to let me over to the city from your affectionate Husband
