BUILDING ON A SHARED HERITAGE
In the last decade, cities all over the nation have taken on
new life. The key to this re-birth has been the recognition that
the greatest asset of any c ommunity is its u nique historical
character. Downtowns, traditionally the center of u rban life,
have regained their prominence b y m aximizing their assets—
large numbers of sturdy, attractive buildings that embody the
accomplishments of the past. Forward-looking cities have
adapted these older quality structures to fulfill contemporary
economic, social, and c ultural needs.
