Dearest Husband
I have received your letter written on the 26th and am very anxious to hear from you again. [Ed. She may be referring to the letter Joseph wrote on August 24; there is no letter in the collection dated August 26, or it may be missing.] It did not get here until the 28th and I had previously written to you in care of Mr. Samuel Starr. I hope you will got it before this time. I thought I would send another for fear it would not reach you safely. I have written to Betsy and she has answered it. She is very sorry to hear of your illness and says your Mother feels very anxious about you. Betsy has written to Fannie who is in Ohio visiting and is going to spend some time in Cincinnati. She may be able to come and see you on the way there or at least write to you- the soldiers are going down to New Haven tomorrow to be mustered out of the service. I hope Dear Husband that you are much better by this time and will soon be able to start home. We are very anxious to see you, every one inquires how you are but I am unable to tell them as I have not heard from you since Mr. Smith came away from the place where you are. If you should be worse Dear Joe you must Telegraph to me for it seems to take a letter so long to get here and if possible I will come to you. I hope you have heard from Martha before this as she is so near you she might go and see you very easily. I hope you will let us know how you are getting along right away for the suspense is worse than knowing how ill you may be. Mr. Smith told me you had the Dysentery back but you said nothing about it in your letter to me. Now Darling I want to have you tell me just how you are. Sometimes I think you must be very sick and then I read your letter over and see that you think you feel better and that comforts me a little. Still it is a week tomorrow since it was written and a great deal may happen in that time. I try not to worry about you still I wish you were home where I could nurse you back to health if possible Dearest. Myra is here with me and feels as anxious to hear from you as I do so if you cannot write yourself, get someone to send me a line. For you the children send their love and wait to see their papa very much indeed.
Your Loving Wife
