My dear Wife,
doubtless before this time you have heard that we have had a battle and it is not finished yet. So far we have been very successful. We have or our forces have been attacked twice and have repulsed the enemy. Our forces are now out chasing up the enemy.
I myself have taken no part in the action as yet as my health was not equal to it. If you should hear that I was not courageous you will I hope will impute [that] to the want of strength. I think the Boys generally have charity for me and I hope you will.
I will write you more in detail soon. We have 8 or 9 wounded out of our Co. and Co. K of Danbury has 1 man killed and some wounded you will undoubtibly see the official report of it. The battle was very severe. It was a heart rending sight to see the killed and wounded. Our forces killed about 125 of the Rebs or 150 and a good many wounded.
This was an attempt to get possession of New Orleans. There is fighting going on in different places about us but we do not know the particlars as yet. Part of our Regt is cut off up at Brashear but we are in hopes that they will hold out until they can be helped. I shall write more in a day or two
