This survey of the Danbury, Connecticut community was was performed by a group of Columbia University engineering students attending summer classes at Camp Columbia.
In 1885, the Engineering School of Columbia University decided to move its classes to Connecticut, partly to escape the heat of New York summers. That summer saw a group of 46 students spend their summer at the new engineering camp in the country. They stayed the season at the Horatio Benton Farm, working and learning in the surrounding towns and forests. By the 1950's, summer class attendance at Camp Columbia was mandatory for students of the Engineering Department. Courses offered at the Camp during this time included: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Technology & International Affairs.
The site is now Camp Columbia State Park/State Forest located in the town of Morris, Connecticut The park preserves the rural campus of Columbia University's Engineering Department, which was in operation here until 1983.
