Nelson R. Burr (1904-1994). Prominent historian of the Episcopal Church. He was born in West Hartford, Connecticut. Burr received his B.A. in 1927 and his Ph.D. in 1937 from Princeton University. In 1942 Burr became a research librarian at the Library of Congress. He held this position until his retirement in 1967. He wrote many parish histories in the dioceses of Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. After his retirement, he moved to West Hartford, becoming a trustee of the Noah Webster Foundation and town historian, and writing articles for historical magazines on Connecticut history. He was an active member of the Epicopal Church Historical Society and served on its board. He was one of the founding members of the National Episcopal Historians and Archivists in 1961.

Each year the Historical Society of the Episcopal Church awards the Nelson R. Burr Prize to the author of the most outstanding article in the last published volume of the Society's quarterly journal, Anglican and Episcopal History. It also honors that which best exemplifies excellence and innovative scholarship in the field of Anglican and Episcopal history.
