The Second and North Society of Branford was established in 1724 by the northern farmers and a meeting house was erected "on the knoll by the river." Jonathan Merrick was chosen to be the first minister of the church, organized in 1727. He served as minister until 1769 during which time the meeting house was completed and a third society of Branford, called Northford, was established.
