Abstract:

James Logan (1794-1872) was the son of an Aberdeen merchant who made a study of tartans which produced a level of standardisation. In 1831, he published the Scottish Gael after five years of research. This was the first time that the setts of any tartans had been published, and all but a few of Logan's tartans are universally accepted.
