This volume, actually titled "Old Skowhegan", contains an essay "Old Canaan During the Revolution" as well as a poem entitled "Grandmother's Grandmother by Louise Helen Coburn. Old Canaan is a town in Somerset County, Maine just east of the town of Skowhegan, the county seat.

Louise Coburn, the author of the forementioned poem, was the daughter of a prominent Skowhegan lawyer, Stephen Coburn, and the niece of former Maine Governor Abner Coburn. She was the second woman to graduate from Colby College where she served as the first female trustee and was a founder of Sigma Kappa sorority. Later in life she took on the huge task of writing a comprehensive history of Skowhegan, published in 1941 as "Skowhegan on the Kennebec".
