James Montgomery Bailey (1825-1891) was an American humorist and journalist, famous as the "Danbury Newsman" Originally a carpenter, he occasionally wrote for newspapers before serving as a member of the 17th Connecticut regiment during the Civil War. Upon returning from the war, he adopted journalism as a profession, and purchased and consolidated the Danbury Times and the Jeffersonian, forming the Danbury News. He was known for his humorous sketches, sometimes original, and often simply descriptions of commonplace domestic situations, which won for him a national reputation and made his paper known throughout the country.
