''DINNER AT THE DUTCHMAN''
. a time honored phrase in Louisville since 18 9 2
The Kunz family began
their 71 years of uninterrupted service in 1892. At that
time the city of Louisville,
a bustling, fast-growing river
port
town,
had already
gained quite a reputation for
its Thoroughbred
horses,
beautiful ladies, fine bourbon
whiskey and home-grown
tobacco. Louisville was recognized widely for its combined charm and graciousness
of the old South with the
hustle and bustle of the in J
b K
dustrial North.
aco
unz
When Jacob Kunz, the founder, opened his doors for business at 440 East Market Street in downtown Louisville, the
general mode of transportation was mule and horse-drawn
carriages, although electric street cars were being introduced.
It was the year a Bay colt by the name of Azra (3-to-1 shot)
won the Kentucky Derby by a nose at famous Churchill
Downs.
Jacob's original wholesale wine and liquor store was frequented by the leading business men of that day who formed
a semi-social club and named it the Peach Tree Club. The
formation of this club naturally led to serving of food with
the drinks.
The Kunz' s business grew with Louisville and as business
prospered successive moves were made into larger quarters in
1903 to 118 West Market Street, in 1907 to 239 South
Second Street, in 1933 to 608 South Fourth Street, in 1941
to 619 South Fourth Street and in July, 1962, to the present
location.
When the move was made in 1933 to 608 South Fourth
Street, the establishment was called "The Dutchman" because
of its quaint style. It was regarded the showplace of Louisville and was one of the finest establishments of its kind in the
South.
Today, at the present location, The Dutchman ts
operated by a son and a grandson of the founder.
THE DUTCHMAN'S DECOR
After visiting some of the world's most outstanding restaurants, we
brought to Louisville an international arrangement for fun, relaxation
and excitement with a close bond between food and furnishings.
Conscious of Kunz's nationally famous Houtskool Pit, we designed the
facade with a huge copper hood. As you enter the door you find yourself in a restaurant containing many restaurants and lounges: The Cafe
Lounge, The Kunz Room, The Gourmet's Foyer, The Cafe Gallery, The
Old Dutchman Room, The Peach Tree Lounge and The Carnival Room.
The floral carpeting in the dining areas was specially designed and
custom-made to complement the damask wall covering in The Kunz
Room, the central dining area. The chandeliers of gigantic proportions
in The Kunz Room were imported from France to add charm to the
color scheme.
The Cafe Gallery is an avenue to all restaurants and lounges. Imported
reproductions of 19th Century French Street Lamps are featured on the
mirrored walls. The decor of the Peach Tree Lounge at the end of this
avenue was inspired by Kunz's history and includes family photographs,
reminiscent of days gone by. The plaid carpeting in both cocktail lounges
was imported from Scotland.
The gold pier mirror in the corridor next to the spiral staircase is an
antique from one of Louisville's fine old homes. The chandelier in this
same area was brought here from New Orleans.
Dividing sculptured wood turnings, brass fire screens, peacock blue
missioned panneling, red felt walls and panels of brass rosettes further
complement the interior.
An adjacent gift shop adds to the international arrangement.
The
shop features Kunz's selections of many imported objects d'art. Private
party facilities on the second floor are gayly decorated with an array of
colors in a carnival theme.
Hubbuch in Kentucky, interior designers
Dahlem, building engineers
THE CARNIVAL ROOM
May we accommodate your next party? Our Carnival Room
comfortably seats ninety persons. It may also be divided for
smaller groups - air walls maintain complete privacy.
Splendid decor and fine Dutchman food add pleasure to any
occasion. Our host or hostess will be happy to show you the
Carnival Room and explain our custom facilities.
