When Fly Blinks a Baby Dies:
Notable feature of fine window displays for baby week campaign
(From Baby Week Committee.)
``Well every one is talking about the Baby Week displays in the store windows, '' said a Danbury woman to-day of course, they are, isn't every one interested in babies—--mother, father, grandmother, srandfather, sister, brother, aunt, uncle and cousins? Besides, the Danbury store windows are certainly worth looking at and talking about. They will do more than this, too, they will draw people right inside and hundreds of those dainty and useful wearables and useables for his or her majesty--—the baby—--will be sold. There are scores of things right up-to date that are just the thing to give to the new baby, the baby who came awhile ago or to lay aside for birthday or even Christmas gifts.
Those posters, too, are attracting a lot of attention and rightly. They were done by pupils of the seventh and eighth grades at New Street school under the direction of their teachers, Miss \index{Keane, Delia} Delia Keane and Miss \index{Griffin, Margaret} Margaret Griffin.
Some of the posters are the work of Miss \index{Hamilton, Hazel} Hazel Hamilton, of the High school, and prove her artistic ability. The other deft young artists are: Howard \index{Brand, Howard} Brand, Howard \index{Reinez, Howard} Reinez, Beatrice \index{Hall, Beatrice} Hall, Claribelle \index{Selleck, Claribelle} Selleck, Grace \index{Mignerey, Grace} Mignerey, Jeanette \index{Gordon!Jeanette} Gordon, Edwin \index{Butler!Edwin} Butler, Nicholas \index{Soloman, Nicholas} Soloman, Albert \index{Gordon!Albert} Gordon, E \index{Heinrich, E} Heinrich, Catherine \index{Waxert, Catherine} Waxert, Elsie \index{Bahr, Elsie} Bahr, William \index{McNamara, William} McNamara, Lydia \index{Curran, Lydia} Curran, Julla \index{Kirner!Julla} Kirner, Arno \index{Gheca, Arno} Gheca, Bennie \index{Tomanio, Bennie} Tomanio, Merwyn \index{Reynolds, Merwyn} Reynolds, Barbara \index{Brownice, Barbara} Brownice, Erselia \index{Young, Erselia} Young, Bennie \index{Lomaine, Bennie} Lomaine, Walter \index{Butler!Walter} Butler, Grace \index{Cornell, Grace} Cornell, Elizabeth \index{Geigerich, Elizabeth} Geigerich, Robert \index{McDonald!Robert} McDonald, Beatrice \index{McKee, Beatrice} McKee, Angenette \index{Allen, Angenette} Allen, Theresa \index{Vulcano, Theresa} Vulcano, Ralph \index{Torracco, Ralph} Torracco, J. \index{Murphy, J.} Murphy, John \index{Balash, John} Balash, William A. \index{Trippert, William A.} Trippert, Clarence \index{Northrop, Clarence} Northrop, Elizabeth \index{Helkobh, Elizabeth} Helkobh, T. \index{Vulcano, T.} Vulcano, Concette \index{Morasco!Concette} Morasco, Ellizabeth \index{Mashalka, Ellizabeth} Mashalka.
Miss \index{Mackey, Isabelle} Isabelle Mackey, the drawing instructor in the schools, has aided this work materially.
Altogether the Baby Week campaign was launched most auspiciously in Danbury this morning.
``Aren't they dear?'' ``Those are too sweet for anything.'' ``Just look, aren't those darling?'' are the enthusiastic exclamations of the women and girls while come others say, ``Look at this. Just what I want for Jane's baby, '' and My, oh, my! you should see the men halt at those windows and it's no mere curiosity as you soon learn if you hear them talk. ``Mighty nifty display, '' says one. ``Some window, and the babies are certainly having their day, '' says another. ``Well, well, '' said one man, ``that fly's a dandy and it certainly hits the mark.''
That brings us to the fly and for once we are not ``swatting that fly'' for this particular fly is very important just now. It blinks once a minute and every time it blinks it marks a tragedy for it symbolizes the death of a baby somewhere. Three hundred thousand babies die in the United States each year and the greater part of them, needlessly. The fly which is in the Danbury Hardware store's window was constructed by Mrs. \index{Rogers!Cephas} Cephas Rogers and Miss \index{Rogers!Miss} Rogers and was electrically equipped by A.H. Hale, \index{Hale, A.H.} the electrician. Howard \index{Mignerey, Howard} Mignerey, of the store staff, arranged the window display.
This Baby Week campaign is intended to help remedy a great blot in our nation--—the carelessness and ignorance in infant life conservation. Remedy and prevention of disease and death are the weapons wielded by the campaign promoters throughout the country.
Many inquiries have been received regarding the public talks and lectures. Next Wednesday evening at eight o'clock Prof. C. E A. Winslow, of Yale, will be heard in Odd Fellows' hall on ``Child Welfare'' and there may be another out-of-town speaker. Charts and other interesting features will mark the address.
Next Saturday afternoon from 2:30 to 4:30 o'clock St. James' Parish House will be the scene of three talks on ``Care of Infants and Children, '' and an illustrated talk on the ``Preparation of Modified Milks, '' Mrs. Matilda Collins,\index{Collins!Matilda} school nurse, Dr. Annie Keeler and Miss Mary Brennan, the visiting nurse.
