Views and Public Speaking
In 1925, Dr. Kate Campbell Hurt-Mead, in her “History of the Medical Women of Connecticut,” found Dr. Keeler notable for her ‘country practice’ in the region around Danbury. She also noted that Dr. Keeler “was not only a doctor, but also a preacher, a writer of tracts, a temperance lecturer, a Sunday school teacher, and all kinds of an ardent suffragist.”
The Newtown Bee said of her lectures “She is a ready talker and her arguments are convincing”. She spoke primarily on religious topics, and many of these speeches were printed into pamphlets. She was also a prolific contributor to medical journals, offering cures for smallpox and diptheria, uses of hyssop oil, and observations through her microscope.
These works offer insight into Annie Keeler’s views on politics and other major issues. In her 1895 address Prophecies Fulfilled in History, Dr. Keeler espoused British Israelism. She also abhorred the massacres of the Armenians under the Ottoman Empire. In an 1896 letter printed in the New York Tribune, she proposed that the US president intercede on behalf of the victimized peoples and facilitate the “immediate and peaceable leaving of the country of all Armenians, Hebrews, and missionaries in the Turkish Empire.”
