Halcyon retired in 1898, at age 70, and left Brooklyn. The 1900 US Census places him in the town of Southeast, NY, with his brother Festus and his brother’s family. The census lists him as a ‘clothing clerk’. His marital status is unclear—it looks like maybe the census taker had put in a D for Divorced, then wrote a W for Widowed over it.

Possibly Halcyon remarried in 1889, then she died shortly after, leaving Halcyon both a widower and a divorcé. Maybe there was confusion between Halcyon Gilbert Bailey and his nephew, also named 'Halcyon Gilbert Bailey'.
