Jonah Parks (1820-1908)
Farmer. Born in England, emigrated in 1826, married around 1835 to Mary Parks (also from England). Parks was involved in the rental dispute with Halcyon and Emily. Halcyon asked Parks for the rent due on Sherwood Farm and Parks paid rent to Halcyon. Emily's trustee sued Parks for the rent which was due to Emily, (owned by Halcyon's wife, Emily in her own name).
Outside of the legal dispute, there isn't much on record about him.
In 1875, lightning struck his house, stunning a man and killing a goose.
In 1876, he and his daughter were ill and someone stole their milk and their horse.
In 1877, his "farm property" was listed for sale.
Lightning cut up strange capers at Ridgebury the other day, where it struck the house of Jonah Parks, ran down the chimney, demolished the stove, passed through the cellar, stunning a man in progress, ran along the ground and burrowed under aa stone wall, coming out the other side and killing a goose which had sought shelter there from the rain.
Mr Jonah Parks and daughter have for several days been confined to their beds by sickness; a lung difficulty. While thus afflicted some imps of perdition stole one of Mr. Park's horses, the best horse in his stables. Steps were at once taken to find the horse and capture the thief, but up to the present time no clue to their whereabouts has been found. During the night, some one made free with the milk, standing in cans in a spring, near his barn.
The farm property of Jonah Parks, of Ridgebury, is advertised to be sold at public auction on Tuesday January 9th 1877.
