1904. Infants

Infants. — Do not wash the abdomen of infants dally. It is unnecessary — is in itself a cause of bowel trouble, and its cessation the remedy needed.

Infants cry only from two causes: Hunger from malnutrition and pain in some form, such as colic, rheumatism or earache. Great care should be taken not to let water enter the ear while washing. For earache — roll a piece of paper, in one end insert a little cotton, upon which pour a little chloroform ; place this end at the ear and breathe a full breath slowly through the other end several times. It works miraculously. Be sure and give every infant, daily, water from a teaspoon. A strong infusion of yarrow, one-half ounce in half a pint of water, reduced to six ounces by heat, used as a lotion, should be tried for sore nipples. — Annie K. Bailey, M. D., Danbury. Conn.
