Clayton Wall Bailey (1858-1863)

Emily and Halcyon had their second child in 1858 while they lived in Brooklyn, NY. Clayton Wall Bailey died in November 1863 at the age of five after the family moved to Ridgebury, CT.

His obituary appeared in the New York Tribune, along with a lovely poem. This poem does not appear written anywhere else, and so it may have been written for the occasion, possibly by a parent.

Bailey–On Sunday Morning, Nov 15 at 7 am, Clayton Wall, only son of Halcyon G. and Emily Bailey, aged 5 years, 4 months and 7 days.

His funeral will take place at the residence of his parents in Ridgebury, Conn., on Tuesday the 17th Nov, at 3 p m. The friends and relatives are respectfully invited to attend without further notice.

       Little Clayton has gone,
He sleeps the sleep that knows
       No waking. Farewell our boy,
   We will not forget you,
   We are now weeping.
