The Poems

The conservatorship trial and its conclusion inspired Halcyon to write two poems which describe how he felt about the conservatorship trial against him. In these poems, Halcyon describes the Keelers as greedy, stingy, and duplicitous. He suggests that they are responsible for various mishaps around Ridgefield. He also goes on a tirade about the unlovely qualities of Keeler women. He claims that the witnesses to his actions were unreliable.

They are full of local references and 1860s memes which may not be familiar to modern audiences. Sidenotes are included to help explain these references. The original broadsheets are held in Brown University's Harris Broadsides collection.
