Abstract
This is on the shelf because the author is an important local writer. The Adler family came to Danbury in the early 1940s, and for many years lived next to Merson's Pond (now for some reason called Mercer's Pond). Renata Adler moved to Newtown in 1978. Her 1983 novel "Pitch Dark" received mixed reviews on release, but has had a more receptive audience in recent years. In my view, its prose is non-linear, leading one through intriguing vignettes that sometimes left me baffled.
