- Anna E. Dickinson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1842, and was an advocate for the abolition of slavery and for women's rights. After a period of high-popularity, her sister claimed that she showed signs of paranoia in 1891. She was then committed against her will to a mental hospital. She sued for damages. When she was released, she moved to Goshen, New York, and lived there for forty years with George and Sallie Ackley. Dickinson and Sallie Ackley were romantic partners. She stayed in Goshen until she died in 1932. This is on the shelf because Anna Dickinson was a very important advocate for abolition and She wrote about an interracial couple before the 1960s which was not very common. Also, she was an important and sometimes-overlooked advocate for women's rights.
