Abstract: Ward writes from Fredericksburg, VA on during the 2nd Manassas Campaign. Lee had advanced to the banks of the River Rappahannock. On the opposite bank was Pope’s Army of Virginia. Lee tried to cross the river near Fredericksburg.; Gilbert was one of 4 children (according to the 1850 census). His parents were of Hiram (of PA) and Amanda (of RI). Gilbert's father was a shoemaker (as of 1850 in Providence) who died in the 1850s. His brother Hiram was mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry (http://www.nextech.de/ma15mvi/Roster/p114.htm).
