Commanded by Kapitänleutnant Joachim Breithaupt, Zeppelin L15 received a direct hit from the anti-aircraft gun at Purfleet, Essex on the 31st March 1916. Attacked again by Second Lieutenant Alfred de Bathe Brandon RFC, 19 RA Sqn (Hainault Farm), in a BE 2C, the air ship eventually became too heavy and crashed in the sea off Margate at 00.15 on 1 April 1916.
