Charles-Edward Amory Winslow papers, 1874-1977, bulk 1915-1945

Abstract Or Scope

The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, organization and subject files, teaching materials, manuscripts, photographs, and other materials documenting the professional career and personal life of C.-E.A. Winslow, a prominent figure in the public health movement. Correspondence focuses on health and social welfare issues with several notable educators, doctors, and social policy advocates. Organization files include material relating to the United States Public Health Service and the American Public Health Association. Records of the Association's Committee on the Cost of Medical Care are also included, as are teaching files from Yale University, writings and lectures, reprints of articles, and family papers. Anne Rogers Winslow's photographic journals of her husband's American Red Cross mission to the Soviet Union in 1917 is an example of family material. These papers form part of the Contemporary Medical Care and Health Policy Collection.

Woolsey family papers, 1750-1969, bulk 1811-1921

Abstract Or Scope

The papers document three generations of the Woolsey family. The most prominent figures in the collection are William Walton Woolsey (1766-1839), land owner and merchant in New York City; his son, Theodore Dwight Woolsey (1801-1889), Greek scholar, political theorist and president of Yale College; and Theodore Salisbury Woolsey (1852-1929), professor of international law at Yale Law School, son of Theodore Dwight Woolsey. The papers of William Walton Woolsey contain extensive business correspondence, ledgers, legal papers, documents relating to land sales in New York and Ohio, as well as family and personal letters. Since he was engaged in the importation of sugar, cotton and hardware, some of his business correspondence is political with discussions of the Jay Treaty of 1794, the problems of piracy, American neutrality in the 1790s and the general politics of the period. Important correspondents are Chauncey Goodrich, Archibald Gracie, Eli Whitney, Noah Webster, Elihu and Nathaniel Chauncey, Oliver Wolcott, Benjamin Tallmadge, Jedidiah Morse, James Roosevelt, John A. Schuyler, Comfort Sands, John Broome, and Nicholas Bayard. The papers of Theodore Dwight Woolsey contain his writings on Greek language and literature, the Bible, international law and the texts of his sermons.

Edwin Way Teale, Connecticut-based naturalist, was the author of thirty-two books. His papers include field notes and drafts for each of his books, early childhood writings, professional writings for magazines, newspapers and book reviews, correspondence- both personal and professional, personal and family documents, scrapbooks, and memorabilia, as well as his photographs (prints, negatives, and transparencies) and his personal library. There is also one box of original John Burroughs material Teale collected over the years.

Hayes Family Papers, 1888-2005

Abstract Or Scope

These papers provide detailed accounts of the life and work of the Hayes family in China during a turbulent time, as well as documenting their post-China experiences. Paul and Helen Wolf Hayes were missionaries serving under the Methodist Episcopal Church in Wuhu and Zhenjiang (Chinkiang), Anhui (Anhwei) Province from 1921 to 1935. Following their return to the United States, Paul Hayes had pastorates in Minnesota and North Dakota. Their daughter, Elsie Hayes Landstrom, was born in China; she wrote and edited various works related to the work of her parents and other Methodist missionaries.

United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia Records, 1882-1977

Abstract Or Scope

The collection includes correspondence, minutes, reports, publications, financial records, and photographs which document the administrative functions of the United Board and antecedent bodies and provides extensive detailed and substantive information about the Protestant colleges and universities in China which were the focus of the Board's activities prior to 1955. The correspondence and writings provide a valuable perspective on life in China and particularly on the political turmoil which characterized this time period. The United Board was established to support and coordinate the activities of Protestant colleges and universities in China. Following the Communist takeover of China, the United Board focused its efforts on educational work in other Asian nations.

Michael A. Peszke Papers, 1971-2013

Abstract Or Scope

Michael Alfred Peszke was born Poland in 1932. After the outbreak of WW II his family evacuated to France and England. Michael A. Peszke received his medical degree from the Dublin University School of Medicine, and in 1956 came to the U.S. and worked in his field of psychiatry until his retirement in 1999. He combined clinical work with research, teaching, and administrative duties, and published widely in his field. After his retirement he turned to his interest in Poland and World War II. He published four books and numerous scholarly articles. Dr. Peszke is the founding member of the Polish Studies Program at Central Connecticut State University. His collection contains his scholarly articles, essays, books, and material which illustrate his interest in history and promotion of Poland, as well as his memoir written in 2006.

James and Margaret Goff Papers, 1929-2003

Abstract Or Scope

This collection contains materials gathered and produced in the course of the Goffs' work, particularly in the areas of religious liberty and religious implications of social development in Latin America. The papers provide first-hand perspective on major shifts taking place in Protestant missions in the later 20th century, including the nationalization of Latin American churches and the rise of liberation theology. The collection is strong in documenting the Goffs' early career in Colombia (1947-1969), the pivotal period of their research assignment in Cuernavaca, Mexico (1969-1973), their work in Nicaragua (1981-1986) and their retirement activities (1986-2000). Material from their years in Peru (1973-1981) is scarce. James and Margaret Goff were fraternal workers (missionaries) serving under the United Presbyterian Church in the USA (PCUSA after 1983), in Latin America (Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Nicaragua) from 1947 to 1986. They served as interpreters of Latin American liberation theology to a Protestant Anglophone audience, translating and distributing important religious documents to church leaders in North America.

This is a collection of publications by Burton Levine (1948-2023), a sociologist, author, and past president of the Jewish Historical Society of Greater New Haven. The collection consists of both published and unpublished works ranging from 1981 to 1997. The publications in this collection include Bag of Wire Expose, Contemporary Sociology, Fellowship, Hartford Courant, The Humanist, Jewish Book World, Jewish Frontier, Jewish Spectator, Na'amat Women, New Haven Register, New York Times, Nursing Forum, ORT Reporter, Present Tense, Shmate, Social Forces, and Women's American ORT Reporter. The publications include book reviews, newspaper and magazine articles, scholarly articles, and opinion pieces. Levine wrote about Jewish culture, but tried to avoid writing about religion. This collection grants insight into social and political issues in the Jewish community and the United States throughout the 80s and 90s from a left-leaning perspective.

The Carl and Shelley Smith Mydans Papers contain photographic prints, slides, negatives, correspondence, notebooks, drafts of writings, objects, and audiovisual material documenting the careers of Carl Mydans, a photojournalist, and Shelley Smith Mydans, a journalist and novelist. The material dates from 1930 to 2005 and provides insight into the Mydans' careers including their work for Life magazine and their book projects. The papers include photographs taken by Mydans while working for the Farm Security Administration, Life magazine, and Black Star photography agency. The Mydans lived and worked abroad for several years and their papers include photographs taken during their various assignments in Asia and elsewhere. Material relating to the Mydans' friends and colleagues, such as Alfred Eisenstaedt, can be found in the papers.

The papers consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, designs, photographs, audiovisual materials, clippings, printed material, and miscellanea documenting the personal life and professional career of Edward J. Logue, lawyer, politician, and urban planner and administrator. Urban planning materials detail his activity in New Haven, Boston, and New York state. Student papers document Logue's life as a Yale University undergraduate and law student (1939-1942; 1945-1947). Copies of Ambassador Chester Bowles's correspondence reflect Logue's role in the foreign service and U.S.-Indian relations. Extensive office files for New Haven and Boston redevelopment work (1954-1967) detail Logue's pioneer work in modern urban planning and provide documentation on the political, business, social, and cultural development of these cities. Urban Development Corporation files provide similar documentation for Logue's work in New York state. Boston mayoral files and scrapbooks include additional documentation on Logue's political career, his redevelopment work, and the city of Boston.

The collection, a part of the William A. Speck Collection of Goetheana, consists of correspondence, documents, playscripts, and other writings by or relating to Goethe and his work. The major strength of the manuscript collection is its documentation of Goethe's literary reception in England and America in the nineteenth century. There are 25 letters and manuscripts in Goethe's hand, and several Faust-related items. Authors represented prominently besides Goethe include Thomas Carlyle, Frank Claudy, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the Faust collector Georg Ehrhardt, Walther Wolfgang von Goethe, August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, University of Illinois professor Julius Goebel, Anna Jameson, Johann Caspar Lavater, Friederich von Müller, Henry Crabb Robinson, Friedrich Schiller, Carl Frederick Schreiber, Horatio Robinson Storer, Bayard Taylor, Marie (Hansen) Taylor, Karl August Ludwig Philipp Varnhagen von Ense, and Albert Wünsch.

World War I Poster Collection, 1914-1918

Abstract Or Scope

This collection of World War I posters provides insight into wartime rhetoric on the homefront, as well as the way civilians adapted to the first world war. In addition to the textual content, the collection serves as a resource for examples of graphic design during the WWI. Some of the posters are for navy recruitment and demonstrate the U.S. military's stated goals and motivations to the public. Other posters are from the Red Cross and advocate for humanitarian aid to Europe and the Middle East. Many of the posters in the collection are to encourage the purchase of war bonds, and demonstrates how propaganda depicted America's mission as a virtuous cause. Finally, a large amount of posters are from the Department of Labor, the Department of Agriculture, and the Food Administration, as well as equivalent state-level offices in Connecticut. These posters encourage Americans to work diligently and to preserve food while reducing consumption. The daily efforts of ordinary citizens during the war can be seen through these messages from the government.

The Park family papers are composed of correspondence and other papers of Park family members and of correspondence and other documents collected and preserved by Park family members for their autograph or historical value. The papers include six volumes of mounted autograph items as well as unbound documents of American and European authors, scientists, military leaders, statesmen, and clergymen. The papers include a large collection of documents relating to the history, faculty, and administration of Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts and of the Andover Theological Seminary. Particularly numerous are the personal and professonal papers of Eliphalet Pearson. The papers also include numerous documents of John Hoff Duke of Charleston, South Carolina, as well as estate papers of Augustine Prevost and documents relating to the early history of Wrentham, Massachusetts. Papers of Park family members include intra-family correspondence and items of related Burr, Edwards, and Reeve family members. Marion Edwards Park's correspondence documents her college years at Bryn Mawr. Correspondence with M. Carey Thomas in the 1920s details the transition of leadership at the college.

Professional material details the academic and literary interests of the Sillimans, particularly in chemistry, physics, and geology. The evolution and development of science, the beginnings of scientific instruction at Yale, and many related topics are documented. Material relating to John Trumbull and the Trumbull Art Gallery at Yale is also included. Family letters and journals offer observations on local and national events, as exemplified by Maggie Lindsley's journal and letters with Benjamin Silliman relating to the Civil War.

Shanghai American School Records: the Phoebe White Wentworth Collection of Shanghai American School History and Memorabilia, 1911-2016

Abstract Or Scope

During the WWII years 1941-1945, however, various spin-offs of SAS were organized by former teachers that kept the school going (under different names), including a school established in a Japanese internment camp. A final spin-off, the Private America School, continued the basic SAS curriculum until 1950 when the Communist government forced the school's closure. The Shanghai American School (SAS) was founded in 1912 for the purpose of educating the children of American missionaries, businessmen, and professionals. It was the culmination of years of work by the American community to create a school in Shanghai that would prepare its children to enter American colleges and universities. The school maintained operations until 1941 when most members of the American community were evacuated due to political tensions between Japan and the United States prior to Pearl Harbor. In 1946, after World War II, SAS was reorganized and maintained operations through commencement 1949 when the Chinese Communist army occupied Shanghai. A period of volatile political and economic conditions ensued, causing the school to close once again.
