Charles-Edward Amory Winslow papers, 1874-1977, bulk 1915-1945

Abstract Or Scope

The C.-E.A. Winslow Papers consist of sixty-five linear feet of correspondence, organization and subject files, teaching papers, photographs, and other materials spanning the period 1892 to 1977, although the bulk of the papers date from 1915 to 1945. Winslow played a leading role in defining and shaping the public health profession in America, and his papers trace the growth of the profession from its origin in bacteriology and sanitary engineering through the development of the voluntary health and health education movements to the emergence of medical care. Winslow made contributions in nearly all areas of public health, and the papers contain material in a wide variety of fields, including public health administration and education, environmental and occupational health, and nursing, in addition to medical care and the voluntary health movement. Winslow was also an influential participant in a variety of world health programs from 1917 through the early 1950s. Although his early work in bacteriology, sanitary engineering, and popular health education are not well documented, the papers do include a limited amount of material in these fields.

Sam Gejdenson Papers, undated, 1911-2001

Congressional records of Sam Gejdenson, U.S. Representative from Connecticut's 2nd Congressional district. The papers are organized in archival boxes containing records spanning Gejdenson's twenty years in office. The papers include newspaper clippings on subjects ranging from veterans issues and the Groton submarine base, to Six Flags and tourism in Connecticut as well as files concerning the recognition of Connecticut's Native Americans. Gejdenson's papers also include press releases concerning the environment, Electric Boat, and the Soviet Union's treatment of Jews.

The Woolsey Family Papers span three generations (1760's to the first quarter of the 20th century), centered mainly around William Walton Woolsey (1766-1839), a prosperous land owner and merchant in New York City; his son, Theodore Dwight Woolsey (1801-1889), Greek scholar, political theorist, and president of Yale College; and Theodore Salisbury Woolsey (1852-1929), son of Theodore Dwight, who gained renown as professor of International Law at Yale Law School.

Lawrence Z. Freedman papers, 1938-1997

Abstract Or Scope

The collection comprises the papers of forensic psychiatrist and former Yale professor, Lawrence Z. Freedman, and dates from 1938 to 1997. The papers are notable for documenting Freedman's significant contributions to the field of forensic psychiatry, as well as his studies of aggression, violence, crime, terrorism, and the interactions between psychiatry and the law. The bulk of the papers document Freedman's numerous research studies. While the most significant of Freedman's studies concerned the topics of deviancy, delinquency, criminality, and violence, he also conducted studies on other topics such as sleep and dreams, human sexual behavior, the effects of recreational drugs on communication, creativity, and obstetrics, among others. The most extensively documented study in the papers is the Sexuality, Violence, and Avarice Study (SVA), conducted by the Yale Unit in Psychiatry and the Law under Freedman's leadership between 1953 and 1957. The study, which used 1262 inmates from the Wethersfield State Prison as research subjects, sought to delineate the characteristics of different types of criminal defenders, gain further understanding of criminal behavior, and develop specific therapeutic treatments for offenders. Materials documenting this study include individual files on the inmates who participated; audio recordings and notes from therapy and interview sessions; project manuals; writings; and subject files. The papers also include significant documentation of Freedman's research into the psychology of terrorism, assassination, and political violence in the form of research materials and writings.

The Dana Family Papers document the personal lives and professional activities of the Dana family of Utica, New York, and New Haven, Connecticut. The collection consists of correspondence, writings, printed material, lectures, notebooks, and miscellanea concerning family members and the scientific accomplishments of James Dwight and Edward Salisbury Dana in the fields of geology, mineralogy, and natural science. The Dana Family Papers are arranged in twenty-four (24) boxes, totalling seven (7) linear feet. Span dates for the collection are 1805-1961, with bulk dates of 1833-1894.

Edwin Way Teale Papers, undated, 1799-1995

Teale's papers include field notes and drafts for each of his books, early childhood writings, professional writings for magazines, newspapers and book reviews, correspondence- both personal and professional, personal and family documents, scrapbooks, and memorabilia, as well as his photographs (prints, negatives, and transparencies) and his personal library. There is also one box of original John Burroughs material Teale collected over the years.

Hayes Family Papers, 1888-2005

Abstract Or Scope

These papers, dating from 1888 to 1994, provide vivid accounts of the missionary experiences of Paul and Helen Hayes (1921-1935), details of Paul's ministry after returning to the United States, and their family and social lives. Paul and Helen met, as they often quipped, "on a slow boat to China." Although sent under the auspices of different boards, their mutual devotion to mission work, shared theological ideals, and sheer enjoyment of each other's company cemented their relationship. They studied together at the University of Nanking Department of Missionary Training, dated frequently, and corresponded much while apart. After deciding to unite in marriage, Helen realized that she must transfer her affiliation from the Reformed Church Foreign Mission Board to the Methodist Episcopal Church Foreign Mission Board so that she could serve with her husband. Since the Methodist Board was obligated to pay the costs incurred by the Reformed Board for her service, Helen often teased Paul that she had been "bought and paid for like a Chinese bride." Due to the Depression in the United States, the Methodist Board could no longer support the Hayes' missionary work in China. They were asked to return to the States in 1935 and serve in the Methodist Church, first in Minneapolis, followed by an appointment in North Dakota, and back to Minnesota where they remained for the rest of their lives. Paul "retired" three times, but essentially continued to minister in various capacities until the disabilities associated with advancing age made it impossible.

The Leo Ornstein Papers contain sketches, manuscript scores, and published editions of Ornstein's musical compositions, including songs, piano pieces, chamber music, and orchestral works. The majority of the manuscripts are in the hand of Ornstein's wife, Pauline. The Papers also hold photographs, programs and reviews, biographical clippings, and prose writings by Pauline Ornstein.

United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia Records, 1882-1977

Record Group Number 11 represents the official archives of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, the United Board for Christian Colleges in China, the Associated Boards for Christian Colleges in China, and earlier committees related to the formation of these Boards. The collection documents the work of these organizations and provides extensive, detailed, and substantive information about the Protestant colleges and universities in China which were the focus of the Boards' activities prior to 1955. The records date from 1882 to 1974, with a concentration on the period 1922 to 1957.

The Paul Bekker Papers, bulk 1883-1937

Abstract Or Scope

The Yale Paul Bekker Papers were given by Sarah Bekker in memory of her husband, Konrad Bekker (1911-1981), Paul Bekker's eldest child. Konrad Bekker had left Germany in August 1933 to join his father in Italy and thereafter in France before moving to Switzerland to complete his doctorate in economics at the University of Basel. He joined his father in the United States in November 1936 at which time he was able to bring with him most of Bekker's papers and much of his library. In 1939 in order to finance the publication of his doctoral dissertation (a requirement for receiving his degree) Konrad Bekker was forced to sell selected items of Bekker's papers (principally letters from prominent musical personalities and a few manuscript scores) to the Library of Congress, while other libraries acquired a number of books and scores. Nevertheless, what remained, preserved in several dozen boxes, represented the bulk of Bekker's papers, including virtually all his family and business correspondence, as well as several hundred letters and additional items by correspondents represented in the Library of Congress collection. Unfortunately virtually all letters and documents relating to Bekker's life after 1933, including his years in Paris and New York have not survived, presumably destroyed by his widow, Margit Bekker Robert.

Charles Olson Research Collection, 1910-1970

Abstract Or Scope

The Charles Olson Research Collection features a wide range of materials covering such diverse topics as the Life and Works of Herman Melville, Black Mountain College, the Beat Generation, the Office of Wartime Information, and the Literary and Cultural Revolution of the 1960's. Correspondents of note include T.S. Eliot, Allen Ginsberg, LeRoi Jones, and Ezra Pound. The collection includes Olson's prose and poetry, correspondence with more than 1500 individuals, documents and ephemera from Olson's personal life, family papers, photographs, newspapers, atlases, books, journals and records from Black Mountain College. The bulk of the collection dates from Olson's lifetime, 1910-1970. However, as the Archives and Special Collections continued collecting donations from friends, acquaintances and family members after Olson's death, some items in the collection date from after Olson's death.

The Paul Hindemith Collection, 1901-1993

The Paul Hindemith Collection brings together primary and secondary source materials which document the life and career of Paul Hindemith, particularly his years in the United States (1940-1953). The Collection holds holographs of 14 compositions by Hindemith, including the Lilacs Requiem and the concertos for clarinet, horn, and trumpet and bassoon. The Collection also holds secondary materials (programs, notes, and reviews) for nearly all of Hindemith's compositions, as well as extensive material relating to Hindemith's classroom teaching and the Yale Collegium Musicum. Additional materials include correspondence between Paul and Gertrud Hindemith and colleagues, friends, and music publishers; photographs and drawings; articles about Hindemith; and miscellaneous materials.

Student Academic and Social Activities Collection, 1927-2022

Abstract Or Scope

The collection contains a variety of information on student social and academic activities. Included are student handbooks, compiled by law school staff and including information on the school, courses, classes, student organizations, living in the area and information from student services including registrar, bursar and career services. Records of the Student Bar Association, founded in 1959, includes correspondence including memorandum and emails on funding of activities and organizations, budgets, membership lists and meeting minutes of the board. The largest series is Student Organizations. Materials here include histories and activities of the various organizations as well as membership, activities, and promotional materials. Student theses and papers of distinction are organized by Papers of Distinction, LL.M. Thesis Collection, Insurance Law Papers and Historic Preservation Honors Papers. Most are also available as bound volumes. Law Journals include the Connecticut Law Review, Connecticut Insurance Law Journal, Connecticut Journal of International Law, and Connecticut Public Interest Law Journal round out the collection.

The collection consists of mmaterials from annual meetings and awards banquets, Alumni publications including the News Bulletin (1944-1960), Starr Report (1969-1990) and the Graduate Report (1999-2014). Bound and print copies of the 'Annual Survey of Connecticut Law' are included in the collection along with numerous photographs from alumni gatherings and events. Profiles of many alumni were gathered mostly from online news sources, and added to the collection (Series IV). A significant number of photographs of individuals and events are found in Series VI. Series V. Photographs -- Graduate Report include photographs used in the Alumni plubcation of that name.

The collection contains writings, correspondence, and other materials documenting Maxine Kumin's literary work and professional and public activities since 1960. Writings include drafts, proofs, and other materials relating to book-length and shorter works. Kumin wrote children's books, poetry collections, essay and short story collections, and novels, and files can be found for works dating from the early children's book A Winter Friend (1961) to the late collection of poems, Still to Mow(2007). Large files can be found for a variety of work: The Abduction (1971), The Long Approach (1985), Looking For Luck (1992), Women, Animals, and Vegetables (1994), Selected Poems 1960-1990 (1997), Quit Monks or Die (1999), Inside the Halo and Beyond the Journey (1999), Always Beginning (2000), and Jack and Other New Poems (2005).

The collection contains published works by Michael Alfred Peszke, including materials documenting the activities of the Polish American Congress, Connecticut Division and the establishment of the Polish Studies Program at Central Connecticut State University. It also contains a memoir written by M. Peszke documenting his earliest recollections from Poland, World War II, living in England after the War, attending medical school in Dublin, and immigrating to the US in 1956.

The Polly Murray papers include a folder of Murray's personal correspondence, primarily dating to the 2000s. The bulk of the collection is made up material she accumulated on Lyme disease, such as newsletters, research articles and reports, and audio tapes of interviews and programs that aired on local radio stations between 1983 and 2000. These materials, particularly the tapes, document Murray's outreach to the community about Lyme disease and her close working relationship with doctors, researchers, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
