The Paul Bekker Papers, bulk 1883-1937

27 Linear Feet
Abstract Or Scope
The Yale Paul Bekker Papers were given by Sarah Bekker in memory of her husband, Konrad Bekker (1911-1981), Paul Bekker's eldest child. Konrad Bekker had left Germany in August 1933 to join his father in Italy and thereafter in France before moving to Switzerland to complete his doctorate in economics at the University of Basel. He joined his father in the United States in November 1936 at which time he was able to bring with him most of Bekker's papers and much of his library. In 1939 in order to finance the publication of his doctoral dissertation (a requirement for receiving his degree) Konrad Bekker was forced to sell selected items of Bekker's papers (principally letters from prominent musical personalities and a few manuscript scores) to the Library of Congress, while other libraries acquired a number of books and scores. Nevertheless, what remained, preserved in several dozen boxes, represented the bulk of Bekker's papers, including virtually all his family and business correspondence, as well as several hundred letters and additional items by correspondents represented in the Library of Congress collection. Unfortunately virtually all letters and documents relating to Bekker's life after 1933, including his years in Paris and New York have not survived, presumably destroyed by his widow, Margit Bekker Robert.

Gerald H. Beard Papers, 1866-1938

12 Linear Feet
Abstract Or Scope
Of most interest in the collection is the fairly complete file of sermons and addresses delivered during the period 1888 to 1921. These sermons, in conjunction with Beard's extensive subject file, provide a valuable record of the style and content of preaching of a successful Congregational minister during a time of liberal resurgence in American Protestantism. Beard came to the ministry from a brilliant undergraduate and graduate career at Yale. He was well equipped to grapple with the intellectual challenges facing liberal theologians of his times, such as historical criticism of the Bible, evolution, and the relationship between science and religion. During his seventeen years of ministry in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Beard was brought face to face with the urban problems of the Gilded Age. His sermons express concern with the issues of temperance, vice, housing and education. With the onset of the First World War, Beard participated in the prevailing surge of patriotism bolstered by theology. Regardless of the topic he addressed, Beard's views were informed by the spirit of confidence and hope typical of a pre-War civilization in which the ideals and patterns of American life were nearly equated with those of American Protestantism.

Margaret S. Mahler Psychiatric Research Foundation papers, 1940-1982

86 Linear Feet
Abstract Or Scope
The Margaret S. Mahler Psychiatric Research Foundation papers contain the research documents, raw and processed data, videotapes and films stemming from Mahler's research studies of tics in children, on childhood psychosis and the studies of normal child development. The material dates from 1955-1977. In the 1940s Mahler conducted research studying tics in children at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, Children's Services Division with Dr. Jean Luke and Leo Rangell. In the 1960s an electrical fire destroyed the majority of research information pertaining to the tic studies. A limited amount of research film and publications from this study remain. The publications are located in the Margaret S. Mahler Papers (MS Group # 1138). The majority of the Foundation material stems from the studies on child psychosis which Mahler conducted with Manuel Furer in the 1950s under the title of "the natural history of symbiotic child psychosis" and of the studies of normal child development, also known as the separation-individuation studies, with Calvin Settlage, Fred Pine and Anni Bergman from 1960-1972. From these studies Mahler developed her theory of separation-individuation in which a child grows through various psychological and physical stages which enable it to recognize its independence from the mother, (individuation) and then in turn pass through the physical break from its mother, (separation). Also included in the papers are films which were created by the Foundation for teaching purposes, and in conjunction with projects sponsored by the Foundation.
