Walther Volbach Collection on Adolphe Appia, 1890-1969

The collection includes correspondence, writings, newspaper and journal articles, photographs, and publications relating to Walther Volbach's research and writings on Adolphe Appia. Included are over sixty typescript essays, articles, and scenarios by Adolphe Appia, many bearing the stamp of the Fondation Adolphe Appia, Geneve. A typescript of Volbach's translation of many of these writings which was published as Adolphe Appia: Essays, Articles, and Scenarios in 1989, is included in the collection. The majority of correspondence consists of letters received by Volbach in the course of his research from Appia's relatives and friends including Appia's cousins Edmond Appia and Blanche Bingham, Appia's pupil and friend Jean Mercier, as well as librarians and fellow researchers, and colleagues with whom Volbach corresponded regarding publications by the American Educational Theatre Association. One reel of microfilm contains letters to Houston Stewart Chamberlain. A stage design by Appia for Act I, scene 1 of Parsifal is the only original design in the collection; however, his designs are represented by copy photographs that were used as illustrations for Volbach's book, Adolphe Appia, Prophet of the Modern Theatre: A Profile.

The collection consists of manuscript and printed letters, prospectuses, and brochures describing oil and mining investment opportunities in Colorado, Alaska, and Arizona. The bulk of the collection concerns mining ventures in Colorado, and particularly well-represented companites include the Crosby-Ehrich Syndicate, the Jack Pot Mining Company, and Tucker, Ballard, and Company of Colorado Springs; the Ramsay C. Bogy Investment Company of Denver; and the Gold Coin Mining and Leasing Company of Victor. The bulk of the materials is addressed to John Waddell and was collected by him as a prospective investor in oil and mining ventures. Some of letters, prospectuses, and reports include pictorial representations of oil fields. Printed maps of the mines of the Pinnacle Junior Mining Company of Colorado Springs and Alaska's Klondike River Valley are also included.

The Walker Family Papers (WA MSS 501) consist of drafts or copies of letters written by Elkanah Walker during the years 1839-54. Many of the letters are unsigned and unfinished. The collection also includes letters written to Elkanah and Mary Richardson Walker and a number of family papers. Among the papers is a typewritten copy of a diary of Mary Richardson Walker, covering the period June 10-December 31, 1838, as well as material concerning the Columbia Maternal Association. The latter consists of the Association's Constitution and minutes for the period September 3, 1838-June, 1842. The Constitution is written in a careful, copperplate hand, possibly Mary Richardson Walker's, and is evidently the Constitution as drawn up at the first meeting, when Mrs. Spalding was elected president, Mrs. Walker vice-president, and Mrs. Gray recording secretary. It is followed by the minutes of the first meeting, September 3, 1838, in Mrs. Walker's hand, and the records of the meetings she attended through August 26, 1840, and an account of the general meeting of June, 1842.

The collection consists of writings, correspondence, photographs, sketches, and awards that document the career of American author Edward Lewis Wallant. The bulk of the collection consists of drafts and proofs of novels and shorter writings, reviews, and related correspondence with publishers and literary agents. Much of the material post-dates Wallant's death and reflects his wife Joyce Fromkin Wallant's efforts to see his last two novels published and to manage his legacy in light of continued interest in his work. Photographs include portraits of Wallant as well as a few snapshots of his family and from his service in World War II. Writings of others include critical analysis and adaptations of Wallant's novels.

The collection consists primarily of pen-and-wash drawings of furniture and home accessories drawn by Max Walter for the W. & J. Sloane company. The drawings depict a range of furniture and home furnishing styles available to the public and were featured in advertisements for W. & J. Sloane printed in newspapers and magazine. The drawings document changing styles in the American commercial domestic furniture industry in the middle decades of the twentieth century. Also found are sketchbooks containing pastel, watercolor, pencil, and pen-and-wash drawings and copies of print advertisements featuring Walter's drawings.

The papers document the life and writings of Aleksander Wat, from his early poetry in the 1910s to the posthumous publication of his work by his wife Paulina and by Czesław Miłosz. Early material (prior to the end of the Second World War) is sparse and consists chiefly of correspondence, personal documents and photographs. Among the early material is documentation of the Wat's exile in Kazakhstan. Later material includes numerous notebooks that contain drafts of poetry and prose writings, and the audio recordings that formed the basis for his memoir Mój wiek.
The papers are of interest not only to researchers studying Wat's creative process and the context of his life, but also twentieth-century Polish literature, the relationship of authors to Soviet society, and the postwar Eastern European émigré literary community in France. Wat's repeated arrests and exile are documented in his notebooks, in personal papers, and in material related to his memoirs. His relationship to the émigré circle centered around the monthly Kultura in France is documented in correspondence with Jerzy Giedroyć, Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, Konstanty Jeleński, and Zygmunt Hertz. The posthumous success of his writings is documented in Paulina Wat's Correspondence in Series I, and in posthumously-dated material in the Writings series, which chiefly relates to the editing, translating, and publishing work of Paulina Wat and Czesław Miłosz.

Correspondence includes a large number of letters from William Watson to Maureen Pring Watson and to publisher John Lane. Watson's personal papers include a group of letters and documents concerning his brother Robinson Watson. Most other correspondence concerns Watson's writing and relations with his publishers; also discussed are his views on literature, his interest in his literary reputation, and his family, friendships, and social engagements.

The Weil papers contain correspondence, production files and writings, records of the Elizabeth Press, printed and audiovisual materials, and personal papers. The collection is made up of twenty-one separate donations made by Weil from 1983 to 2005. The first several accessions consist exclusively of materials relating to publications by Weil, while later accessions, beginning with the October 1990 Acquisition, consist of larger groups of material including correspondence, production files, and other papers. Correspondence in the collection, which features letters from writers, journal editors, publishers, booksellers, the many libraries to which Weil made donations, and others, is thus spread over multiple accessions. It is either sorted roughly, into so-called letter general folders ("A"-"Z") or by date, or it is unsorted; the bulk of the letters are also still housed in original envelopes. Individual correspondents include: Bob Arnold of Longhouse Publishers & Booksellers, Cid Corman, Theodore Enslin, David Giannini, Lyman Gilmore, Henry Lyman, Simon Perchik, Felix Stefanile, Jack Stillinger, Pierre Ullman, and others. Correspondence can include enclosures, such as drafts of writings, photographs, and printed material. Most of the production files in the collection appear to relate to the limited edition chapbooks and printed keepsakes published by Weil under his own name (James L. Weil, Publisher) from the mid 1980s onward, though records relating to the Elizabeth Press (1963-1981) can also be found. The production files, which include correspondence, drafts, specifications, proofs, and printed versions, feature work by William Bronk, Cid Corman, Larry Eigner, Aleksis Rannit, Karl Shapiro, Felix Stefanile, and others. Printed materials include newspapers, journals, clippings, and offprints containing reviews and concerning literary matters such as modern fine printing and small press publishing.

Other papers include research notes, her notes from courses she enrolled in, her teaching notes and class material, and various printed material that she collected as part of her research.

The Glenway Wescott Papers consist of correspondence, journals, notebooks, manuscripts, personal and financial papers, research files,photographs, graphic items, clippings, objects, and audiotapes. The material documents Wescott's life, work, and personal relationships with many noted artists, writers, and performers of the 20th century including his long-time companion, Monroe Wheeler, many of whose papers are included here.
Series I, Correspondence, consists of six subseries: Wescott-Wheeler Correspondence (letters between the two men); Wescott Family Correspondence; Wescott Family Third-party Correspondence; Wheeler Family Correspondence; General Correspondence; and Third-party Correspondence.
Series II contains Wescott's Journals and Notebooks, an extensive collection of personal records detailing the author's life and thoughts from the late 1930s up to shortly before his death. Wescott's "journals" are in the form of three-ring binders, filled with notes, clippings, copies of letters, and images.
Series III, Writings, represents a portion of Wescott's original works. The writings are divided into five subseries: General Writings (including drafts of an autobiography, "The Odor of Rosemary"); Writings about People; Lectures, Broadcasts and Speeches; Writings about Glenway Wescott; and Writings of Others.
Personal Papers contains a range of material documenting the various activities of Wescott and Wheeler arranged in 18 subseries. Financial Papers, gathers together material in a chronological run, from 1925 through 1986. Series VI contains Wescott's own Research Files of various subjects. Photographs are grouped into ten subseries. Graphic Items consists of various image materials. Clippings covers a wide range of subjects, with a focus on art, book reviews, current events, essays and articles, and people. Series X, American Academy of Arts and Letters, concerns Glenway Wescott's membership in this organization, including the years of his presidency, 1960-62. Objects consists of pieces of realia received with the archive. Audio-Visual Materials is a collection of sound recordings and a videotape.
Series XIII, Additions transferred from the Monroe Wheeler Papers, contains items relating to GW which came to light during the processing of the Monroe Wheeler Papers and which could not be easily integrated into the existing archival arrangement.

The Western Film Collection consists of press kits, pressbooks, posters, photographs, souvenir programs and other materials that were distributed by film producers to movie theater operators to promote their films. The Western films represented in this collection are Western genre films, films set in the trans-Mississippi West, and/or films with Western characters. Press kits typically include advertisements prepared for submission to newspapers and magazines; black-and-white photographs of scenes from the films with credit information; printed booklets called pressbooks containing information about the film, actors, and other personnel; and posters for lobby display. Early press kits were called "campaign kits." While the majority of press kits included in the collection consist of foldered printed material, there are several examples of electronic press kits on compact disc. The Buddy Holly Story pressbook contains a "flexi disc" recording bound in.

Hart, Sergio Leone, André de Toth, Nicholas Ray, Raoul Walsh, Anthony Mann, and Sam Peckinpah. Also represented are works featuring notable western stars, such as William S. The Western Filmscript Collection consists of over two thousand filmscripts dating from 1918 to 2008, for motion pictures set in the trans-Mississippi West. The collection includes continuity, cutting, dialogue, and shooting scripts in a range of drafts from initial to final, and in some cases revised versions of the same draft. Scripts for produced, as well as unproduced, films are represented. Highlights include: fifteen Tom Mix silent scenarios from 1919 through 1927; four scripts by Zane Grey, including Riders of the Purple Sage (1931); eleven scripts directed by John Ford, including My Darling Clementine (1946), Stagecoach (1938), and Fort Apache (1947); five films featuring Gary Cooper, including The Virginian (1929), High Noon (1952), and Springfield Rifle (1952); eleven featuring Clint Eastwood, including For a Few Dollars More (1966), Dirty Harry (1970), and Pale Rider (1985). Scripts set in the twentieth-century West include American Graffiti (1972), Beverly Hills Cop (1984), The Buddy Holly Story (1978), Heaven's Gate (1979), The Long Goodbye (1972), and Terms of Endearment (1981). In addition to scripts written for theatrical release, there are scripts for episodes of television series including Rawhide, Death Valley Days, Dallas, and others.

It includes over 300 letters from Fisher to West, 1938-1945; autobiographical memoirs by Fisher; volumes of travel journals (in the form of letters to his colleague Halford Mackinder) covering Fisher's work with the Visual Instruction Committee of the British Colonial Office and recording his visits to Australia, Borneo, Canada, China, Fiji, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Japan, Malta, New Zealand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tasmania, and Tonga, 1907-1910; various articles, clippings, notes, manuscripts, and ephemera; and a selection of drawings, paintings, and prints by Fisher whose subjects include the home of writer Margaret Leigh, and portraits of his contemporaries Lascelles Abercrombie, Walter de la Mare, T. Sturge Moore, George W. Russell, and W. B. Yeats, among others. Also present is an etching by Hungarian printmaker Gyula (Julius) Komjati, whom Fisher visited in 1932. Although West and Fisher never met in person, their long-distance friendship gave the artist someone to whom he could entrust his work and legacy, a particularly important concern when British citizens were anticipating Germany's impending attack. In addition to describing daily life in wartime Britain, Fisher's letters to West provide further personal history and context for the material West was receiving.

The papers document many aspects of Rebecca West's life, including her friendships with the Hutchinsons and others, her marriage and her relationship with her son, Anthony West. In addition to letters from West and her husband Henry Andrews, there are letters from others to Hutchinson about West, including Victoria Glendinning, Alan Maclean, Alexandra Pringle and Diana Stainforth. Writings includes photocopies of early poems by West and a corrected typescript of a group of late poems, "An Old Woman Is Told That She May Have Cancer," as well as writings by Hutchinson on West and on her works. Hutchinson's research files contain material gathered for his bibliography of West's writings, biographical information on her, and files documenting his role as an executor of her literary estate. Clippings consists of articles, book reviews, and other short pieces by and about Rebecca West.

The collection consists of souvenir theater programs for plays set in the trans-Mississippi West, dating from 1921 to 1994. Productions represented include dramas, comedies, and musicals such as Annie Get Your Gun (1946), Bus Stop (1955), Flower Drum Song (1958), Show Boat (1948), and Zoot Suit (1979). The majority of the programs are from Broadway productions, and are dated by year of the New York opening when not indicated on the program. Additional programs represent touring companies of Broadway productions and locally-produced shows including Ramona (Hemet, California, 1939) and Promised Valley (Salt Lake City, Utah, 1947).

The Whitman collection consists of letters, manuscripts, photographs, artwork, and personal papers documenting the life and work of Walt Whitman. There is personal and business correspondence from Whitman to family, friends, editors, and publishers, including Richard Maurice Bucke, John Burroughs, Julius Chambers, Moncure Conway, Nathan Hale, James R. Osgood and Company, George Routledge & Sons, William Sloane Kennedy, William Michael Rossetti, John Swinton, and Louisa Whitman. There are letters to Whitman from Civil War soldiers and from a number of writers, including Samuel Clemens, John Camden Hotten, William Douglas O'Connor, Allen Thorndike Rice, and Algernon Swinburne. There is also a small group of third-party correspondence to Whitman scholar George Rice Carpenter.
Whitman's writings are well represented in the Rabinowitz and Van Sinderen gifts. The Writings subseries in the Van Sinderen gift includes subdivisions for autobiographical writings, diaries, lectures and speeches, notes and notebooks, outlines and proposals, poetry and the writing of others. The writings are present chiefly in galley proofs, many corrected and signed, and holograph manuscripts.
Photographs and artistic representations of Whitman include work by well-known nineteenth century photographers, studios, and artists. There are photographs by Thomas Eakins, William Kurtz, Major & Knapp Engraving, and Brady National Photographic Art Gallery. Works of art include a bust of Whitman by Samuel Murray, a woodcut by Bertrand Zadig, and engravings by Samuel Hollyer, William James Linton, and Stephen Alonzo Schoff. Also of note are papers relating to George Whitman and New York Civil War regiments.
