The papers consist of original sketches and drawings by Frederic Rodrigo Gruger illustrating stories written by prominent American authors and published in several major journals and magazines. There are twelve mounted and numbered pictures containing illustrations for "Stover at Yale" by Owen Johnson, which was serialized in McClure's Magazine in 1911 and 1912. There is an unnumbered, mounted picture containing an advertisement for "Stover at Yale," and a photograph of author Owen Johnson and Frederic Rodrigo Gruger at the latter's home in Bermuda. There are also several illustrations by Gruger for poems and stories that ran in other publications between 1919 and 1935.

Correspondence, photographs, memorabilia and biographical materials relating to the Civil War make up the major part of these papers. Most important are the fifty-five letters from Henry Clay Trumbull, chaplain of Henry Ward Camp's regiment, to the Camp family, describing Camp's career in the Union Army and his death on the field. Among the biographical memorabilia are photographs of Camp and Trumbull, an autograph album from Camp's Class of 1860 at Yale College, military papers and newspaper clippings about Camp's death. Two nineteenth-century family diaries are also in the papers: those of Lizzie B. Camp and of C. H. Camp.

Printed ephemera related to African American political activism and arts primarily in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1913-1990, with the bulk of the material from 1963 to 1976. Significant organizations documented in the collection include the Philadelphia chapters of the Black Panther Party and Peace and Freedom Party, as well as local and national electoral campaigns of the Communist Party of the United States of America. Many of the items document speakers and events sponsored by political, art, and social pressure groups. Items include handbills, leaflets, direct mail, posters, and other printed ephemera.

Photographs, typescript reports, and other documents of Horace L. Scott as civil engineer for the United States Reclamation Service. Includes 240 photographs and 12 postcards in 3 photograph albums; 20 loose photographs and 2 loose postcards; 4 typescript reports with 69 photographs and 36 blueprints for St. Mary's Canal bound in, produced by the United States Department of the Interior; 3 printed maps of United States Reclamation Service projects and 3 printed topographical folding maps of Montana; 2 pamphlets produced by the Great Northern Railway Company; and other printed materials. The collection documents the Milk River Project, a project which called for a system of dams, canals, and reservoirs stretching across Montana with the purpose of creating 120,000 arable acres along the Milk River. Photographs depict the irrigation project works, Glacier National Park, the Blackfeet Indian Reservation and Siksikaitsitapi people, and the Flathead Indian Reservation and members of the Bitterroot Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d'Oreilles tribes. Also included are Scott's resume, list of references, and notebook from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, circa 1909-1926.

The S. J. Sedgwick Collection consists of manuscript notes and drafts for several of S. J. Sedgwick's slide lectures on the West ("Big Trees and Yosemite Valley," "Central Pacific Railroad," "Indians," and "Monterey, California") and one on geology; the manuscript draft and later proofs of the 4th edition of "Announcement of Professor S. J. Sedgwick's Illustrated Course of Lectures and Catalogue of Stereoscopic Views of Scenery of ... the Rocky and Sierra Mountains...", produced by the Union Pacific Railroad Company; and a scrapbook documenting his work for George A. Crofutt, publisher of a series of western travel guides. There are also printed bills and advertisements for Sedgwick's lectures. Both woodcuts and printed maps are included in the collection.

Correspondence, writings, artwork, photographs, and printed material which document the life of Robert Henri. Principal correspondents include his parents, brother, first wife, George Bellows, Emilia Cimino, Randall Davey, Hartman Kuhn Harris, Helen Niles, Edward Redfield, Mary Fanton and William Carman Roberts, John Sloan, and the J.B. Lippincott Company. Henri wrote lengthy letters to his family in the 1880s and 1890s, corresponded with art colleagues, discussing his work and that of others, his students, exhibitions, and new art theories and tools.
There are holographs and typescripts of his book Art Spirit, journals, lecture notes, and drafts of articles. There are eleven notebooks studying Hardesty Maratta's theories of color and composition and the "Whirling Square" theory of Jay Hambidge. There are also clippings about Henri, exhibition catalogs, and course catalogs. There are over forty photographs, of Henri and others in Paris and in the United States, and Henri and his artwork. There are also family papers belonging to Henri's parents, and papers belonging to his sister-in-law Violet Organ, who transcribed many of Henri's letters and wrote a biography of Henri.

The collection consists of six M. Paul Roche lithographs, from a series of eight, of Yale buildings and two advertisements for them. Included are the following lithographs: [No. 1] The High Street entrance to the Sterling Memorial Library; [No. 2] Harkness Memorial Gateway from Branford Court; [No. 3] Vanderbilt Gateway from the college campus; [No. 4] The Great Hall of Sterling Memorial Library; [No. 6] Harkness Tower; and [No. 7] Wrexham Tower. Also in the collection are thirteen original drawings.

This collection has been divided into two series: Correspondence and Related Papers. Within each series, papers have been organized according to individual family members. Folders have been arranged chronologically by birth date from oldest to youngest, with the exception of the large number of letters produced daily between Augustine and Ella Harlow, which have been filed at the end of the Correspondence series. Within each folder, items have been arranged chronologically and most folders contain correspondence both written and received by the specific couple or family member. Items with no dates have been filed in the back of the folders.
