The papers consist of correspondence, lectures, notebooks, diaries, journals, and other material documenting the personal lives and professional careers of the Silliman family, including Benjamin Silliman (1779-1864) and Benjamin Silliman, Jr. (1816-1885). Personal material details family life, relationships, social activities, and cultural pursuits. Professional material details the academic and literary interests of the Sillimans, particularly in chemistry, physics, and geology. The evolution and development of science, the beginnings of scientific instruction at Yale, and many related topics are documented. Material relating to John Trumbull and the Trumbull Art Gallery at Yale is also included. Family letters and journals offer observations on local and national events, as exemplified by Maggie Lindsley's journal and letters with Benjamin Silliman relating to the Civil War.

Abstract Or Scope

The collection consists of register books of various Jewish communal organizations, mainly in Europe, with a few from the Middle East and the United States. The volumes include minute books of synagogues and social welfare committees, account books, school registers, and wills. They document the activities, concerns, and conditions of Jewish communities, as well as their relations with neighbors and governmental authorities. Shanghai American School Records: the Phoebe White Wentworth Collection of Shanghai American School History and Memorabilia, 1911-2016

Abstract Or Scope

During the WWII years 1941-1945, however, various spin-offs of SAS were organized by former teachers that kept the school going (under different names), including a school established in a Japanese internment camp. A final spin-off, the Private America School, continued the basic SAS curriculum until 1950 when the Communist government forced the school's closure. The Shanghai American School (SAS) was founded in 1912 for the purpose of educating the children of American missionaries, businessmen, and professionals. It was the culmination of years of work by the American community to create a school in Shanghai that would prepare its children to enter American colleges and universities. The school maintained operations until 1941 when most members of the American community were evacuated due to political tensions between Japan and the United States prior to Pearl Harbor. In 1946, after World War II, SAS was reorganized and maintained operations through commencement 1949 when the Chinese Communist army occupied Shanghai. A period of volatile political and economic conditions ensued, causing the school to close once again.

Correspondents of note include Arnold Toynbee, Ernst Antevs, Henry Adams, James Breasted, Frederick Jackson Turner, Margaret Sanger, Henry Fairchild, James Rowland Angell, and Henry Seidel Canby.

Jonathan Warner papers, 1836-1887

Papers of Jonathan Warner and his family of Jefferson in Ashtabula County, Ohio, 1836-1887. Correspondence documents the activities of Warner's immediate and extended family, and documents their opinions on sectionalism and slavery. The collection includes letters written by his brother, George Washington Warner, which document his emigration to California in 1852, as well as his activities in Washington Territory and Idaho Territory until 1865. Business records in the collection chiefly consist of deeds, contracts, and other legal instruments related to real estate transactions in Ashtabula County, as well as property tax assessments.

Collection of letters assembled by Lady Smith from her correspondence and that of her husband, Sir James Edward Smith (1759-1828); before each section of letters, she provides a brief biographical sketch of the authors represented in those letters; the third volume contains mainly letters reacting to her husband's death and to her Memoir and Correspondence of the Late Sir J.E. Smith; collection touches on many aspects of the Smiths' interests, personal and public, scientific and literary; it illustrates their many friendships, especially with the family of William Roscoe (1753-1831) and the Holkham literary circle; especially interesting are the discussions of gardening and concerning the Linnean Society of England; on the whole it provides a well-rounded picture of Norfolk society and literature from the late 18th century to the mid 19th century; the collection includes several MS and printed poems.

Cos Cob Power Plant Records, undated, 1891-1986

The Cos Cob Power Plant, an electrical power plant located in Greenwich, Connecticut, was part of a pioneering venture in mainline railroad electrification. With the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad designed an efficient system using alternating-current (ac) electrification that facilitated railroad traffic into urban areas after the New York legislature passed laws prohibiting the use of steam locomotives in New York City south of the Harlem River. Construction of the Cos Cob Power Plant was completed in 1907 and served as the generating station for power to the trains. The collection consists of blueprints and wiring diagrams for the electrical systems of the Woodlawn, New York, to New Haven, Connecticut, line, with architectural drawings, foremen's log books, records of coal received, and administrative correspondence.

Marvin H. Pope Papers, 1916-1998

The Marvin H. Pope Papers document the life and work of a prominent professor at Yale. Correspondence, notes, writings, course-related materials, collected materials, and audiovisual materials shed light on his academic work and his interactions with colleagues and students. Marvin H. Pope taught at Yale in the Department of Religious Studies and Divinity School from 1949 to 1986 and was one of the world's leading authorities on Ugarit. Pope made many contributions to biblical studies, which included helping to prepare the Revised Standard Version of the Bible and advising the National Council of Churches on the New Revised Standard Version. His scholarly output was prodigious, and he helped to bring the public's attention to the importance of Ugaritic texts in the study of the Bible. During his lifetime he published numerous scholarly articles and three major books, "El in the Ugaritic Texts" and two commentaries for the Anchor Bible Series: "Job" (1965) and "Songs of Songs" (1977). Pope is remembered for his wit, which made him a popular professor during his years at Yale. .

Eunice Johnson Collection on Timothy Richard, 1867-2002

This collection is comprised primarily of research materials collected by Eunice Johnson in her study of Timothy Richard (1845-1919), a Welsh Baptist missionary, statesman, and educator who spent forty-five years in China. The collected resources were used by Eunice Johnson in the writing of her Ph.D. dissertation, "Educational Reform in China, 1880-1910: Timothy Richard and his Vision for Higher Education." The collection includes photocopies and some originals of writings by and about Timothy Richard, as well as information about China during the time period when Timothy Richard was active there. The collection also includes memorabilia from the Centennial Celebration of Shanxi University (1902-2002), of which Timothy Richard was a co-founder.

John G. Magee Family Papers, 1870-2014

This collection includes correspondence, writings, photographs, films, and other documentation of the life and work of John Gillespie Magee, his son John Gillespie Magee, Jr. and other family members. The Rev. John G. Magee (1884-1953), a graduate of Yale University, served as a missionary to China under the Episcopal Church for twenty-eight years. John G. Magee witnessed the Japanese invasion of Nanking (Nanjing) in December of 1937 and the subsequent Nanking Massacre. At great risk to his own well-being and safety, Magee filmed and photographed atrocities perpetrated by the Japanese soldiers against the citizens of Nanking, He was later able to smuggle these films out of Nanking, providing evidence and witness to the war crimes that had taken place. This collection also includes the papers of John G. Magee, Jr. (1922-1941), eldest son of John G. and Faith Magee. John G. Magee, Jr. wrote the well-known poem "High Flight" prior to his death at the age of nineteen while on active service in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. The papers regarding John G. Magee, Jr. document his life through his writings, photographs, and correspondence.
