Lawrence Z. Freedman papers, 1938-1997

426 Linear Feet
Abstract Or Scope
The collection comprises the papers of forensic psychiatrist and former Yale professor, Lawrence Z. Freedman, and dates from 1938 to 1997. The papers are notable for documenting Freedman's significant contributions to the field of forensic psychiatry, as well as his studies of aggression, violence, crime, terrorism, and the interactions between psychiatry and the law. The bulk of the papers document Freedman's numerous research studies. While the most significant of Freedman's studies concerned the topics of deviancy, delinquency, criminality, and violence, he also conducted studies on other topics such as sleep and dreams, human sexual behavior, the effects of recreational drugs on communication, creativity, and obstetrics, among others. The most extensively documented study in the papers is the Sexuality, Violence, and Avarice Study (SVA), conducted by the Yale Unit in Psychiatry and the Law under Freedman's leadership between 1953 and 1957. The study, which used 1262 inmates from the Wethersfield State Prison as research subjects, sought to delineate the characteristics of different types of criminal defenders, gain further understanding of criminal behavior, and develop specific therapeutic treatments for offenders. Materials documenting this study include individual files on the inmates who participated; audio recordings and notes from therapy and interview sessions; project manuals; writings; and subject files. The papers also include significant documentation of Freedman's research into the psychology of terrorism, assassination, and political violence in the form of research materials and writings.

15 Linear Feet
Abstract Or Scope
The scope of the P.T. Barnum collection is wide, and reflects the many interests of its subject, P.T. Barnum. In addition to representing his own manuscript materials from all stages of his life, it collects the subjects of his business related interests, namely the American Museum, the Circus and the Winter Quarters at Bridgeport, Jenny Lind, Jumbo the Elephant, and Charles S. Stratton (General Tom Thumb) and the performers associated with Stratton. The content of each subseries varies, but all of them have booklets of information, advertisements, programs, and printed ephemera that speak to the marketing of the subject, their life, and why Barnum was willing to invest in their success. Manuscript material appears in certain series, but not all. Heavily represented though are images - both illustrations and photographs - of all subjects.

Bradford Edward Ableson Papers, 1978-2010

11 Linear Feet
Abstract Or Scope
This collection documents the life and work of Bradford E. Ableson, distinguished Yale Divinity School alumnus and prominent U.S. military chaplain. First a Presbyterian minister and later an Episcopal priest, Ableson was decorated for his service during the Persian Gulf War and served as Command Chaplain aboard the USS George Washington aircraft carrier, one of the largest warships in the world. From 1996 to 1999 Ableson served as chaplain at Camp David during the Clinton administration, providing pastoral care to the President, his family, and support staff at the Maryland retreat. Correspondence, writings, sermons, and subject files provide detailed documentation of Ableson's thought, leadership skills, and dedication to his work. From early on in his career as a Navy chaplain, Ableson recognized the profound disconnect between Christians from the West and citizens in the Muslim world, and in the 1980s he emerged as an expert on preparing service members with knowledge and understanding that would make them respectful visitors in Muslim countries. Ableson's journal written during operation Desert Storm (1991) provides valuable documentation about the work of a chaplain in a combat setting.
