Correspondents of note include Joseph Bloomfield, William Eustis, Charles Gratiot, George Hay, Thomas Jefferson, Lafayette, Return Jonathan Meigs, James Monroe, Amos Stoddard, and Martin Van Buren.

Other contents include several letters by Anne Isabella Milbanke, Baroness Byron; two notes by Catherine Byron, the poet's mother; and eighteen letters from Augusta Leigh to Francis Hodgson.

Materials relating to private organizations and businesses are also included. The collection focuses on the Connecticut and New England region.

Collection contains materials collected by Lansing V. Hammond documenting the life and career of Hugh Thomson, including correspondence, writings, artwork and other papers. Correspondence includes originals and copies of letters by Thomson, as well as correspondence of M. H. Spielmann, friend and co-author with Walter Jerrold of the Thomson biography entitled Hugh Thomson, His Art, His Letters, His Humor and His Charm, with Thomson's widow Jessie Naismith Miller Thomson, Walter Jerrold and others. Writings include research notes, drafts, proofs and other materials related to Spielmann's biography of Thomson. Artwork contains many original drawings and watercolors by Thomson, some copies and photographs of his works, and drawings by C. E. Brock and H. M. Brock. Other papers include clippings, catalogs of exhibitions, printed material, sales catalogs and other material related to Thomson.

Correspondence and official documents originating from various CSA government departments and from individual Confederate states, 1861-65. Includes correspondence of Jefferson Davis, Confederate cabinet members and congressmen, and other officials, as well as official reports of Civil War battles and events, estimates of expenditures and appropriations, petitions, special orders, forms, passes, receipts, bonds, tax records, and other documents. While the bulk of the material is administrative in nature, many of the documents, such as tax records and discharge papers, concern particular individuals, and there are a few letters from private citizens, such as one to President Davis from two women who offer to go behind enemy lines. The collection also includes designs for an alternate Confederate flag.
