Wakefield Family Papers, 1904-2000

Correspondence, writings, and collected material document the life and work of Arthur Paul Wakefield and family, including information regarding medical work in China and interactions with Chinese colleagues, among them Francis C. M. Wei. Arthur Paul Wakefield was a medical missionary serving in China under the Disciples of Christ and Episcopal mission agencies from 1905 to 1927. He served at Luchowfu Hospital in Anhui (Anhwei) province from 1912 to 1919 and at Boone College, Central ChristianUniversity in Wuchang from 1919 to 1927. Following his return from China, Wakefield was involved in public health and tuberculosis treatment in Maine and Massachusetts.

Collection consists primarily of manuscript sermons written by a Presbyterian clergyman in Long Island, New York. Jonathan Huntting (1778-1850) graduated from Yale College in 1804 and studied theology under Lyman Beecher. He was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Long Island in 1805 and was minister first at Fishkill and then Southold from 1807 to 1828.

Sewanee Controversy Papers, 1867-1988

The Sewanee Controversy Papers include the official documents surrounding the event, as well as personal correspondence and collected material. From 1952 to 1954 there was great controversy over the admission policies of the School of Theology at the University of the South at Sewanee, an Episcopal Seminary. On June 6, 1952, the Board of Trustees rejected a request by the Synod of the Fourth Province to "open the existing seminaries in the South to students of all races." The Board of Trustees concluded that "the admission of Negroes, or men of any other race...is inadvisable." This resolution sparked a flurry of responses, most notably the resignation of eight faculty members in protest. In June 1953, the Board of Trustees voted to change its policy.

Laurence was associate director of the Rural Life Department of the Church of Christ in Thailand from 1961 to 1970. Virginia was involved in educational work and the Church of Christ in Thailand Music Committee.

Following World War II Walter served as Candidate Secretary of the ABCFM and later they worked with Church World Service in Taiwan.

Letters, writings, and collected material document the life and work of James Fyfe Laughton. Laughton was born of missionary parents in China, returning to Scotland to continue his education. He later studied at Crozer Seminary in Chester , PA, was ordained to the Baptist ministry in 1912, and served as pastor of a church in Westport, New York for seven years. In 1920 he was called by the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society to direct the work of their mission ship "Fukuin Maru" sailing among the islands of the Inland Sea and coast of Japan. He returned to America in 1926, traveled widely, and was engaged in religious education, lecturing, writing, and pastoral work.

Correspondence, writings, collected materials, and biographical material document the life and work of Philip C. Landers. Landers and his wife, Ethna, both pursued careers in Christian education. Landers was a founder of the "University of Life" movement in Minnesota. He later worked for the International Council of Religious Education in Chicago, which merged into the National Council of Churches, based in New York. He coordinated the nationwide introduction and interpretation of the new Revised Standard Version of the Bible in the early 1950s.

Regular and substantive correspondence as well as writings and biographical information provide an excellent picture of the lives and work of the Wahls. Carl and Elisabeth Wahl served as missionaries in China under the Evanglical Church. They were first stationed in Shenzhou (Shenchow) and later in Tongren, Guizhou (Tungjen, Kweichow Province) (now Guizhou) at the Ming Teh Boys' School. Following Carl's untimely death in 1934, Elisabeth returned to China as a teaching missionary until forced to leave by the Sino-Japanese war.

John Curtis Smith and Mary Snell Steele Smith were Congregational missionaries from New England who served in Sri Lanka (Ceylon), which was then part of the India Mission of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM). This collection provides intensive documentation for the lives of missionary families, especially "missionary children" and their extended families in the 1850s through the early 1870s. Of particular value in this collection is the large number of letters written by the Smith children themselves. The six children in the Smith family were all born in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and spent at least half of their childhoods there before being sent or taken to live in the United States, where they resided with relatives and friends in New England.

Collection box with art by Dennis Cusick, 1821 Box OV12

Dennis Cusick (c. 1800–1824) was a Tuscarora painter from New York and a founder of the Iroquois Realist Style of painting. There are three images on the box, including a depiction of a Seneca schoolhouse. The box was presented to the United Foreign Missionary Society of New York by James Young.

Bradford Edward Ableson Papers, 1978-2010

These papers include correspondence, sermons, writings, and other documentation of the life and work of Bradford Edward Ableson, a Yale Divinity School graduate, Captain in the Chaplain Corps of the U.S. Navy, and clergyman. A prominent chaplain with a distinguished 25-year naval career, Captain Ableson provided combat ministry with Marines during Operation Desert Storm in the first Gulf War. From 1996 to 1999, he assumed Presidential Service duties as the Chaplain at Camp David, Maryland during the Clinton Administration. In 2004, he was promoted to the rank of Navy captain and assumed responsibilities as Command Chaplain of the U.S. Strategic Command.

Lacy Family Papers, 1905-2002

Correspondence, writings, and collected material document the life and work of three generations of the Lacy family. William H. Lacy directed the Foochow Mission Press and, after 1903, the Methodist Publishing House in Shanghai, while his wife Emma Nind Lacy taught at the Anglo-Chinese School in Fuzhou (Foochow) and elsewhere. Their four sons and one daughter all served as Methodist missionaries in China. Son George Carleton Lacy spent twenty years as general secretary of the American Bible Society in China and became Bishop of the Methodist China Central Conference in 1941. His son, Creighton Lacy, was a missionary to China from 1946 to 1951 and later taught at Duke University Divinity School.

Correspondence, writings, and collected material document the life and work of educational missionaries Paul and Frieda Taylor and their family, who served at Huachung University in central China. From 1924 to 1927 Paul V. Taylor taught philosophy and English at Huping College, Yueyang (Yochow) [now Yueyang], Hunan province. After a period in the U.S., Taylor served as professor and Dean of the School of Education and later Dean of the Faculty at Huachung University (Central China College) in Wuchang between 1929 and 1950. Frieda Taylor was a musician who taught at Huachung and was mother to the couple's three children; the family was often separated due to health reasons and political unrest.

These papers are part of the sources gathered by Jan H. Boer for the writing of his eight-volume series Studies in Christian-Muslim Relations. The collection deals almost exclusively with the Nigerian situation, especially the entire history leading up to the sharia declaration and its aftermath. The materials include Nigerian magazines and newspaper clippings as well as scholarly articles and lectures, essays, and conference papers from Christian, Muslim and secular perspectives.

This collection is comprised of writings, correspondence, news clippings, and photographs documenting the life and work of Eleanor "Lee" McGee, including her ordination to the Episcopal priesthood on September 7, 1975. Lee McGee was one of the first women ordained to the priesthood of the Episcopal Church and an early female faculty member at Yale Divinity School, serving from 1987 to 1997 as Squire Professor of Pastoral Counseling. Her career spans a variety of work in college chaplaincy, parish ministry, teaching social work, psychotherapy, consulting and parenthood. This collection provides valuable documentation of the changing role of women in the church.

This collection documents the work of H. Boone Porter, an important figure in the Episcopal Church during the second half of the 20th century. A graduate of Yale, Berkeley Divinity School, and General Theological Seminary, Boone was a Professor of Liturgics at General Theological Seminary from 1960 to 1970. As a member of the Standing Liturgical Commission of the Episcopal Church, he was a major architect of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. Later he served as Executive Director of the Town and Country Church Institute (Roanridge) and editor of The Living Church from 1977 until his retirement in 1990. While in retirement Porter completed a Master's degree at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He wrote several books and many articles related to liturgy and the mission of the church.
