The collection comprises the drawings, diary, and log books of Edwin Augustus Porcher, from tours of duty to South and East Asia (1849-1853) aboard the HMS Cleopatra and the Mediterranean and North Africa (1857-60) aboard the HMS Hibernia, HMS Kertch and HMS Boxer.

This representation illustrates the fashion of British colonial modes of transport by the early 1850s. Chinese figures carry a palanquin, while a horse-drawn carriage also charges by. Happy Valley was the site of a British racecourse and a Protestant Cemetery (see watercolor "11").

11. Hong Kong. Protestant cemetery in the Happy Valley. October 26, 1852., 1852 October 26 Box Oversize 1

The Hong Kong Cemetery (also known as the Protestant Cemetery and the Colonial Cemetery) was opposite the oldest racecourse in Hong Kong in Happy Valley, and in the middle of a line of cemeteries that included the Roman Catholic cemetery (founded 1848) and later Islamic cemetery (1870). In 1853 (a year after this view), the captain and crew of the HMS Cleopatra erected a monument to Scottish trader and explorer Robert Burns, grandson of the poet, who was killed by pirates of the Tunku River (for which the Cleopatra was dispatched to avenge, see watercolors '25' and '27').

This collection consists of various materials produced by the Yale Center for British Art from 1965 to the present. The materials include calendars, event materials, exhibition booklets, educational pamphlets, and visitor guides, as well as documentation of YCBA publications and programs. "Calendars" documents the history of the Center through its regularly-printed calendar of events and exhibitions. "Events" contains invitations and programs for lectures, symposia, dinners, and other events. "Exhibitions" contains material published in relation to exhibitions, including brochures, informational booklets, and programs for events held in connection with exhibitions. Through these materials, the collection provides a record of the Center's activities and development from its conception to the present.

James Forbes archive: A voyage from England to Bombay with descriptions in Asia, Africa, and South America, circa 1765-1800

The collection comprises thirteen manuscript volumes, each of which contains numerous illustrations as well as transcriptions of letters originally composed while Forbes was in India, with a particular concentration on the natural history of India. The manuscript was finished in 1800, although most of the drawings are those done at the time of the voyage, circa 1765-1776. Volume 1 includes a presentation page, dated 11 April 1800, in which Forbes gives the set to his daughter, Elizabeth Rosée Forbes. Elizabeth would later edit and revise the second edition of Forbes's Oriental memoirs (1834).

Albums, 1947-1992

Comprises the bulk of the collection, housed in 103 albums containing stamps produced between 1952 and 1988. This part of the collection is also organized alphabetically, by country or territory. Stamps are placed in standard mounts, with multiple mounts affixed to each album page (rectos only). The majority of items are individual stamps, but also mounted are numerous sheets or mini-sheets of stamps, as well as the occasional booklet of stamps. The country or territory name is written in ink at the top of each page, with additional notes in ink interspersed describing the title or date of a stamp series.
