New Haven City Burial Ground Records, 1793-2020

20.5 Linear Feet (40 boxes + 18 broadside folders + 1 roll)
The New Haven City Burial Ground Records document the founding, development, and administration of a historically important graveyard in New Haven, Connecticut, known as the Grove Street Cemetery. The records cover the activities of both the Standing Committee of Proprietors—the cemetery's governing board—and the various clerks and superintendents who have administered the institution's daily business since its founding in 1796, as well as in the years leading up to its incorporation. Predominantly financial in nature, the records reveal the challenges inherent in operating a public/private burying ground that was the first in the country to be incorporated and the first designed with avenues for funeral processions and fenced lots sold for family burials, both entirely original concepts in the eighteenth century.

Account book, 1845-1850 Box 39, Folder 13

Untitled volume of accounts kept by an unidentified man, with entries arranged chronologically from January 1845 through October 1849. The first page of listings is headed "Deaths in January 1845" but all other pages have only a month and year at the top of the page. Most listings give just the name (many are a wife, son, or daughter of) with the age and price charged, but it is unclear if the price is for grave digging, transportation, or another task; some entries have more detail ("Going to Hotchkisstown with Hearse," "Going to Catholic Yard with Hearse," "For Horse and Hearse to go to Fair Haven," "Carrying Miss Mary E. Dudley to Boat") and there are disinterments ("disinterring Miss Hooker," "Digging up child of C. B. Lines"). A spot check of names reveals people interred in both Grove Street and Evergreen cemeteries, with many names not found in either. Non-white persons are identified.
