Collections

This collection of 46 documents consists of manuscript bills of sale, receipts, estate appraisals, deeds of gift, manumission statements, promissory notes, and other papers documenting slave ownership and the slave trade in the United States between 1770 and 1863. The bulk of the material documents slavery in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Kentucky and Alabama. There are also legal documents recording slavery transactions in Maine, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and Louisiana.

Schattschneider was the author of numerous books and articles about American government and American political parties. Schattschneider was president of the American Political Science Association (1956-57), and spent the majority of his career (1930-71) teaching at Wesleyan University.

Elmer F. Farnham was a resident of Norwich, Connecticut, and a features writer for the Norwich Bulletin. He was author of The Quickest Route: The History of the Norwich & Worcester Railroad, published in 1973 by Pequot Press. The collection consists of photographs of locomotives and railroad scenes of the Norwich & Worcestor Railroad, the Central Vermont Railway, and other southern New England railroads.

A collection of photographs, including scenes of Litchfield after a fire and interior of Graniss and Elmore store. Ganung and Elmore, general merchandise and grocery firm of Litchfield, Connecticut, was founded by George S. Elmore (1856-1904) and C. M. Ganung in 1880 with stock purchased from a bankrupt company. In 1882, Mr. Ganung sold his interest in the store to Westoen G. Granniss (1855-1940) of Litchfield, Connecticut, and the store was renamed Granniss and Elmore. The firm dealt in general merchandise such as groceries, dry goods, dishes, crockery, carpets, window shades, screens, linoleum, and wallpaper. The firm's motto was "Everything guaranteed as represented."

Elmo Roper (1900 - 1971) was a pioneer in the fields of market research and public opinion polling. The collection contains correspondence, speeches, speech cards, articles, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks, some job files from Roper Research Associates, and a variety of press releases, advertisements, and legal papers from the various groups and corporations with which he was involved.

The Elsa Hinchman Clark collection (2010-271-0) contains documents from the Woodruff family.

Detailed correspondence, diaries, photographs, and collected material document the life and work of a young, single woman missionary in China. Elsie Clark Krug was an American Methodist missionary in Fuzhou (Foochow) from 1912 to 1918. She taught at Hwa Nan College, then in its preliminary stages a mission-supported college for women.

The collection consists of manuscripts, realia, and ephemera from the family of Elsie DeWitt.

The personal papers of Elsie Flink, Waterbury resident and personality. Flink worked at several local factories and was a member of St. John's Church. She participated in a study about radium poisoning since she was one of Waterbury's Radium Girls.
