Collections

The papers consist of correspondence correspondence, legal and financial documents, printed matter, and other papers of Edwards Pierrepont, attorney, judge, Attorney General of the United States, and minister to Great Britain. Some of the correspondence relates to such questions as Reconstruction, bimetallism, the "whiskey ring" controversy, the Hayes-Tilden election, and the Republican Party. Important correspondents include William Maxwell Evarts, Adelbert Ames, Hamilton Fish, Ulysses S. Grant, William H. Seward, Edwin M. Stanton, and Roscoe Conkling.

Sermons and biographical material document the life and work of a New England Congregational minister during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Edward Stevens Sanborn (1866-1945) was a Yale Divinity School graduate who served various Congregational parishes in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

Correspondence, diaries, sermons, essays, speeches, and printed matter relating to E. Tallmadge Root's service as a Congregational minister in churches in New England, 1890-1935. Included also are speeches made in connection with his candidacy in Massachusetts for governor (1940) and Senator (1944) for the Prohibition Party. Personal papers include autograph albums, family account books, scrapbooks, and miscellaneous family correspondence. One-third of the papers consist of diaries kept by E. Tallmadge Root from 1874 to 1948; by William Scott Root from 1874 to 1880; and by other family members from 1842 to 1899.

The Edward Taylor Collection contains nine volumes of autograph manuscript writings, including poems, sermons, notes on divinity, and commonplace books; and fragments of writings, correspondence, and other materials removed from bindings of these volumes. Some volumes include autograph manuscript ownership inscriptions and other annotations by Taylor's son-in-law Isaac Stiles and grandson Ezra Stiles.

Professional correspondence and subject files maintained by Hartman in connection with his career. The correspondence relates chiefly to Hartman's work as state consultant for the Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare (1923-1929). Important correspondents are T.N. Carver, W.A. Griffin, Joseph W. Kelly, Joseph Lee, Benjamin C. Marsh, A.D.K. Shurtleff, and Edwards Albert Park. The major portion of the papers consists of topical files, principally on planning and on zoning, which was of particular interest to Hartman, who was active in the writing of zoning laws in twenty-eight states. The files, which contain printed matter, notes on legal decisions and practical problems, offer thorough documentation of all aspects of zoning in the urban environment. Twenty-five cities in Massachusetts are included in the planning section as part of a series of Master Community Surveys, 1912-1940.

The records consist of lists, correspondence, manuscript materials, and committee notes documenting the publication of various works by the Yale University Press. Some of the works documented include: Interaction of Color by Josef Albers, Encyclopedia of African Studies by John M. D. Crossey, and Earth, Temple, and Gods and Shingle Style by Vincent Scully.

The collection comprises the drawings, diary, and log books of Edwin Augustus Porcher, from tours of duty to South and East Asia (1849-1853) aboard the HMS Cleopatra and the Mediterranean and North Africa (1857-60) aboard the HMS Hibernia, HMS Kertch and HMS Boxer.

The materials consist of 18 original ink drawings by Edwin C. Taylor and Robert Galvin of Yale dinnerware designs depicting Yale buildings.
