Collections

Collection consists of personal papers and materials collected by David Wagstaff. Included are diaries of Wagstaff's travels from 1907-1921; correspondence, organizational papers, photographs and other materials related to the Ristigouche Salmon Club and the Restigouche Riparian Association; personal papers including catalog cards of Wagstaff's book collection; and materials generally concerning hunting and fishing collected by Wagstaff,including shooting targets, shooting awards, photographs of unidentified individuals, generally from the nineteenth century, one photograph album of the United States Military Academy (West Point) class of 1861, and one album of members of the 1867 New York (State) Legislature Assembly.

The Davies Family Papers document Thomas Frederick Davies (1793-1865) and his family. Davies was a Congregational clergyman and editor of religious magazines who lived in the Westport area and in New Haven, CT. The Davies Family Papers are closely related to the Adams Family Papers also held at the repository. Davies' daughter Mary Sanford Davies married Ebenezer Banks Adams, Sr. in 1837 and the families remained in close touch by correspondence.

The collection consists of printed contracts completed in manuscript between Canadian voyageurs and their outfitters (1801-1821) and other documents relating to the Canadian fur trade, including correspondence, financial papers, and legal documents (1724-1856). Outfitters include M'Tavish, Frobisher & Co., M'Tavish, M'Gillivrays & Co., and the American Fur Company. Destinations include Michilimackinac, Grand Portage, Rainy Lake, Fort William, and "Posts of the Northwest in Upper Canada."

The Davies/Scroggie Collection of White Pass and Yukon Documents and Ephemera provides evidence of commerce and transportation in the Yukon Territory and Alaska dating between 1899 and 1947. The Collection largely consists of time rolls and distribution of labor books documenting the firm White Pass and Yukon Route. Other material in the collection includes certificates, customs documents, bills, correspondence, and legal documents, which represent commerce, transportation, and the Klondike gold rush (which began in 1897). The Collection is useful for understanding labor history, daily life during the gold rush, and the complexities of railway construction in the Yukon Territory and Alaska.

The collection consists of correspondence, receipts and other records that document business and commerce in the vicinity of Dawson, Yukon Territory, in the early twentieth century. The bulk of the material spans the dates 1906 to 1913, with one letter from 1903. The Bank of British North America correspondence documents the activity of the Dawson branch and includes correspondence from grocers, wholesalers, miners, jewelers, and insurance and real estate agents. Landahl's Emporium correspondence documents the wholesale and retail purchase and sale of goods. The Canadian Department of the Interior Records consist of reimbursement receipts and receipts for mining permit fees, documenting the survey and inspection of mining and timber resources in Yukon Territory.

The Davis & Geck Company was founded in 1909 by Charles T. Davis and Fred A. Geck. The company specialized in surgical sutures, beginning with catgut and moving on to kangaroo tendons and later to advanced synthetic materials. For much of its history, Davis & Geck was the world's second largest producer of surgical sutures. The company became part of American Cyanamid in 1930. After subsequent sales, the company was renamed Sherwood, Davis and Geck. Though the D+G offices were initially located in Brooklyn, New York, the company purchased a factory in Danbury, Connecticut, in the early 1950s. This factory was scheduled for closure in 1998 following the sale of Sherwood, Davis and Geck to the Tyco Corporation and the transfer of plant operations to Mexico.

The Davison Art Center, housed in the 1839 Alsop House, comprises exhibition galleries, classrooms, offices, and the university’s collection of prints and photographs. The Art Center and much of its collection was the gift of George W. (Wesleyan class of 1892) and Harriet Baldwin Davison.

The Davison Art Rooms were created at the opening of Olin Memorial Library in 1928 as a tribute to George W. (Wesleyan class of 1892) and Harriet Baldwin Davison. The Davison Art Rooms were closed and their contents transferred to the newly-constructed Davison Art Center for its opening in 1952.
