Collections

This collection contains subject records and materials generated by the Office of Marketing and Communications at the University of Hartford.

The collection consists of sixteen Oxyrhynchus Papyri items. The most notable item (Oxy. P. 1230) relates to the New Testament text of Revelations 5,6. Other items include poetical and prose fragments, orders, contracts, receipts, letters, and a prayer.

Collection of 55 Chinese and Japanese facsimile scrolls (total of 37 works), full-size and miniature format handscrolls and hanging scrolls. Each scroll is identified and labeled in English, some have accompanying information leaflets. Each scroll has been assigned an identification number. From various sources including purchases, gifts, and transfers from Yale University Art Gallery Print Room. No further documentation found.

Abraham Jehiel Feldman, born in 1893 in Kiev, was one of the leading Reform rabbis in the country. He came to the New York in 1906 and received his ordination in 1918 from Hebrew Union College. He was invited to return to New York where he served for almost two years under Rabbi Stephen S. Wise. Following that, Feldman became the assistant of Joseph Krauskopf for five years at his congregation in Philadelphia. In an oral history recorded in 1974, Rabbi Feldman commented on the influences he received from serving under two extremely prominent rabbis who were so different in approach. From Wise, he learned to use the pulpit as a "completely free forum" to espouse his views without control from the congregation. Under Krauskopf, he learned skills for building and maintaining a congregation. Feldman was selected in 1925 to lead at Beth Israel in Hartford. From his boyhood, Feldman was an ardent Zionist, and he spoke out on the matter from the Beth Israel pulpit to his decidedly non-Zionist congregation. During the next few decades, Feldman was unable to convert many of his congregants to Zionism, but he did neutralize opinion and prevent them from joining anti-Zionist groups. He also played a leading role in changing the general attitude among Reform leaders nationally. Feldman acquired a national reputation as a major leader of Reform Judaism and served on the Board of the Hebrew Union College, the Executive Council of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and as President of the Central Conference of American Rabbis. He retired in 1968 but continued serving as Rabbi Emeritus until his death in 1977. Rabbi Feldman was also very active in the local secular community. He served as Chaplain to the Connecticut State Guard, the Connecticut State Police, and the Veterans' Hospital. Feldman was involved with various other governmental agencies including the local Selective Service Re-employment Board, the National Recovery Administration in Connecticut, and Department of Defense post-war missions to the Pacific Rim. He was active in inter-faith activities that included the Connecticut Advisory Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, lectures at the Hartford Seminary, and the founding of the Hartford Inter-Faith Committee. Rabbi Feldman was a prolific writer of numerous books and articles. He also co-founded the Jewish Ledger in 1929 and edited it for 48 years. In addition, Feldman was a member of the Publications Committee of the Jewish Publication Society, on the Executive Board of the Jewish Book Council of America, and a contributing editor of several Jewish encyclopedias. This is far too small a collection to provide an in-depth look at Rabbi Feldman's life and profession, but, together with material in the Beth Israel Collection, it provides insight into his relationship with the non-Jewish community.

An artificial collection of correspondence, manuscripts, volumes, and miscellanea relating to France, 1115-1941.

A collection of approximately 400 manuscript items, including letters; letterbooks; copies of statutes, pleadings, opinions and precedents; King's Bench reports; abridgments and commonplace books of cases; and other papers, documenting the development and practice of English law and the evolution of the English legal system from the thirteenth into the twentieth century. Included are an early copy of Henry de Bracton's De legibus Anglie; a fourteenth-century pocket compilation of "Statuta vetera" that opens with a copy of the Magna Carta; case reports from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries; letters, opinions and notes by a range of English legal figures, including William Blackstone, Edward Coke, Edward Law, Lord Thurlow, and Francis Wedderburn; and guides to court proceedings and practice from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

The Osborn Manuscript Files contain single, unbound manuscripts and small groups of manuscripts acquired for the Osborn Collection from various sources at various times.

An artificial collection of correspondence, financial, legal, and government documents, political memoirs, military records, literary manuscripts, and autographs relating to Great Britain, 1362-1945. An anonymous essay about Charlotte Corday, memoirs attributed to George Grenville, and writings by George Grote and Sir Henry Maine are included.

The papers document the lives and careers of members of a prominent Florentine family, the Spinelli, and several related families.

The Walter L. Pforzheimer Collection of Historical Manuscripts contains approximately 500 manuscript documents, circa 1370s-1870s, consisting of letters, legal documents, and other manuscripts written or signed by European heads of state, government, diplomatic, military or church officials, or literary authors. Most materials are French, including documents signed by French royalty and nobility, 14th-18th centuries. Many French manuscripts date from the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, including printed Revolutionary government documents completed in manuscript. A small amount of similar documents from other European countries and the United States are present. Some documents contain evidence of previous ownership, such as annotations, collectors' bindings, or bookplates. Also present are materials relating to Pforzheimer's research and collecting, 1920s-circa 1960s, consisting of card files, biographical notes, engraved portraits, and vendor descriptions.

Collection of 115 items, bound together in one volume, and written mainly in the hand of John Browne, but with numerous items in other hands. The entries primarily address Parliamentary activities, particularly in the House of Lords, including several extracts from Parliamentary journals; lists of Parliamentary bills; a copy in Browne's hand of King Charles I's speech at dissolving Parliament in 1640; speeches by Charles II; and records of payments to Parliamentary officers. Other items include a satire on the Earl of Pembroke by Michael Oldisworth and several non-Parliamentary accounts and receipts.

The Saul Steinberg Papers consist of correspondence, artwork, professional papers, personal papers, photographs, published artwork, clippings, collected and source material, realia, financial papers, and audio-visual material documenting artist Saul Steinberg's professional and personal activities.

The Boswell Collection contains the correspondence, diaries, and manuscripts of author James Boswell; estate records, letters, personal and professional papers, and other materials documenting the lives and careers of ten generations of Boswells and their possession of the barony of Auchinleck; and correspondence relating to the political career of Alexander Bruce, Earl of Kincardine.

Collection includes letters to Bartlett from various correspondents, concerned mainly with bibliographical matters, relating especially to Shakespeare and his period. Correspondents include Joseph Quincy Adams, Tucker Brooke, Beverly Chew, George Watson Cole, Harvey Cushing, John Drinkwater, John Farquhar Fulton, W. W. Greg, Geoffrey Keynes, Amy Lowell, Ronald Brunlees McKerrow, Julia Marlowe, William Allan Neilson, Alfred Edward Newton, Alfred William Pollard, Seymour de Ricci, Otis Skinner, Edward Hugh Sothern, Chauncey Brewster Tinker, John Dover Wilson, and the Henry E. Huntington Library. The Papers also include lecture notes on bibliographical subjects; sample pages of early books ca. 1471-1675; six boxes of 4 x 5 glass slides used in her lectures; minutes, membership lists and printed material from the Hroswitha Club in New York; and notes and newspaper clippings related to various authors, libraries, and book collecting.

The collection contains three parts: autograph documents and letters, Bowling Green Press records, and contemporary American newspapers. The most significant part of the collection are the ca. 45 autograph items relating to French military history from the Middle Ages through the 19th century. There are also 12 carbon copies (signed) of letters from Theodore Roosevelt to various recipients (1911-1913) together with notes, extracts, and full copies of Roosevelt speeches (1912-1913). Series II of the collection is made up of the records of the Bowling Green Press of New York City, of which Arthur Pforzheimer was treasurer. Included are correspondence, ledgers, account books and incorporation papers. Contemporary memorabilia collected by Walter Pforzheimer is comprised of the initial issues of the Washington Times and U.S.A. Today and the final issue of the Washington Star.

The papers contain correspondence, printed material, writings and other papers documenting the scholarly career of Walter Wilson Greg, particularly his work on the Bibilography of the English Printed Drama(BEPD), his book reviews and his periodical articles concerning the editing of Shakespeare.

The collection contains bookplates of various religious orders in the Christian tradition. Dating from the 16th to the 18th century, many of the bookplates represent Catholic communities or organizations in Germany.

The collection comprises bindings removed from bound volumes when the Latin American Manuscripts Collection (MS 307) was reprocessed in 2000. These bindings cannot be connected to the documents that were inside the individual bound volumes.

A collection of correspondence; government documents, including legal cases, reports, decrees and proclamations; church documents; published illustrated materials; and writings from the Caribbean islands (Cuba, Jamaica, Santo Domingo, Barbados, and the Virgin Islands) on civil, military, religious, economic and social topics.

A collection of European and American portrait and topographical prints that includes work by printmakers Samuel Arlent Edwards, George Edward Perine, Eugène Sadoux, and others.

The collection contains examples of bookplates by Spanish artists as well as those commissioned by Spanish patrons.

Subjects include chivalry, tournaments, coronations, and heraldry.

Collection, in multiple hands, of eight booklets bound into one volume, primarily on Parliamentary activities. The manuscript begins with a list of the members of Parliament between 1295 and 1327. Other items include extracts from Parliamentary journals; a list of the customs and privileges of both Houses of Parliament by Robert Bowyer; rules for the House of Commons; and, in Browne's hand, a patent transferring Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford's office of Constable of England to his brother, dated 1338.

A collection of correspondence; government documents, including reports, commissions, decrees, and awards; church documents; published illustrated materials; maps; and writings and poems from Mexico on civil, military, economic, religious, and social topics. Additions to the collection consist of photographs by Mario Bucovich, maps, and published illustrations.

This collection contains examples of graphic art, primarily before 1800. Many of these materials are not dated; an educated guess as to the age of the material was based on paper type and subject matter.

A collection of correspondence; government documents, including reports, commissions, decrees, legal proceedings, account books, treasury records, petitions, geographic relations and awards; church documents; writings and poems; and published illustrated materials from the Andean region of Latin America (Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela) on civil, military, economic, religious, and social topics.

The collection, a part of the William A. Speck Collection of Goetheana, consists of correspondence, documents, playscripts, and other writings by or relating to Goethe and his work. The major strength of the manuscript collection is its documentation of Goethe's literary reception in England and America in the nineteenth century. There are 25 letters and manuscripts in Goethe's hand, and several Faust-related items. Authors represented prominently besides Goethe include Thomas Carlyle, Frank Claudy, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the Faust collector Georg Ehrhardt, Walther Wolfgang von Goethe, August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, University of Illinois professor Julius Goebel, Anna Jameson, Johann Caspar Lavater, Friederich von Müller, Henry Crabb Robinson, Friedrich Schiller, Carl Frederick Schreiber, Horatio Robinson Storer, Bayard Taylor, Marie (Hansen) Taylor, Karl August Ludwig Philipp Varnhagen von Ense, and Albert Wünsch.

The Walter L. Pforzheimer Papers contain personal correspondence, diaries, writings, notes, and family papers; correspondence, reports, and other documents relating to the United States Army during World War II, the Central Intelligence Agency, the CIA's Historical Intelligence Collection, and the United States Defense Intelligence College; historical manuscripts and related materials collected by Pforzheimer concerning the history of military intelligence, including autograph documents, signed, by European heads of state and American presidents, seventeenth-twentieth centuries; prints, posters, and newspapers, including rare seventeenth-twentieth century items relating to Molie?re and other subjects; framed oil paintings and prints; book collecting notes, lists, vendor receipts, and card catalogs; rare postage stamps, including propaganda and forgeries; photographs, glass and film negatives, glass stereographs, and photograph albums; video and audio recordings, including interviews with Pforzheimer and presentations by him; microfilms; computer disks; and objects collected by Pforzheimer, including Molie?re medals, military decorations, and memorabilia relating to his intelligence career.

Collection of approximately 50 tracts, almost entirely manuscript, concerning British politics and government. Many document relations between King Charles I and Parliament, including copies of speeches before Commons by Bagshaw, Grimston, Owens, and Pym and copies of petitions to the King by the Scottish Parliament and the Berkshire Grand Jury. Other topics include the royal succession, taxation, and court practices.

The collection consists of 73 volumes, mostly in English, containing sermons, sermon-notes, prayers, religious reflections, tracts, commonplace books, Biblical commentaries, and other religious and theological texts, mostly from the later seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Almost half of the volumes include sermons or sermon notes. Most authors are unidentified, but identified authors include John Nicholas, John Henderson, and William Barton. Devotional works include William Chilcot's Practical Treatise Concerning Evil Thoughts; an English version of Dominique Bonheur's Pensées chrétiennes; and The Life of Mr. De Marsay and his Wife, an extensive spiritual autobiography by a Quietist and mystic. Volumes documenting the spiritual and devotional lives of women include A Comfortable Companion for Afflicted Souls, being a threefold discorse collected out of Scripture by a woman; the notes of Sarah Meadows on methods of raising devout children, drawn from her own experience as a mother; the commonplace book of Frances Drake; and the spiritual biography of Sarah Kirshaw.There are also several Roman Catholic works, including one by the English Benedictine Augustine Baker, as well as two works documenting the Scottish Church and the Covenanters.

The collection contains over 2,000 short manuscripts and printed documents including news bulletins, diplomatic reports, histories, letters, scholarly and practical treatises, legal records, broadsides, genealogies, sermons and orations, plays, and poems. It is especially rich in material concerning the diplomatic role of the Papal States during the War of the Spanish Succession; reports on papal conclaves, instructions to nuncios, and letters from the College of Cardinals; and items pertaining to Ancona, Naples, and the D'Aste family. Other well-documented individuals and events include Innocent X; Olimpia Maidalchini-Pamphili; Queen Christina of Sweden; Cardinal Mazarin; Louis XIV; controversies concerning the Jesuits; the siege of Vienna in 1683 and the 1701 revolt against the Spanish crown in Naples; natural disasters; and the extention of papal authority.
In addition, the collection also contains a number of treatises, including works on alchemy, astronomy, cartography, military science, numerology, law, philosophy, and rhetoric, as well as an eight volume edition of the works of the physicist Paretus, and numerous satires on prominent individuals.

The Luis Alberto Guajardo Collection of Músquiz, Mexico Records contains administrative records from the town of Músquiz, Coahuila, Mexico. The records were collected by Luis Alberto Guajardo, a general in the Mexican Army. Guajardo's military travels allowed him to visit local record offices in Coahuila and research the history of the region. This research led to the formulation of Guajardo's Apuntes Datos y Noticias Para la Historia de Coahuila, a history of the Coahuila region. The Records are arranged in five overlapping chronologies. This order has been maintained from an earlier, unknown processor, perhaps Guajardo himself. The chronologies include circulars issued by the Coahuila government; religious, legal, military, land, water, and mining records pertaining to Musquiz and the Coahuila region; census records, including the documentation of Indians, widows, slaves, and vassals; legal records, including records administering issues of violence against women; documents pertaining to the administration of Indian affairs, particularly those of the Seminole and Apache tribes; and indices of correspondence and decrees in Coahuila, wills, and court proceedings. Also included is material on the founding and history of the Texas region, as well as English language manuscript land petitions, citizenship records, and legal proceedings of Thomas Jefferson Chambers.

Correspondence, diaries, manuscripts of writings, narratives, biographical sketches, documents, reports, addresses, deeds, tax receipts, printed material, and other papers, relating to early American colonial settlement, the American Revolution, settlement of the West, slavery, the Civil War, Spanish-American War, women's suffrage, and various political questions. Includes circa 100 letters (1838-1855) to Alvah Hunt, of Greene, Chenango Co, N.Y, describing current political issues, especially Whig politics, from Millard Fillmore, Hamilton Fish, Horace Greeley, Washington Hunt, William H. Seward, and Thurlow Weed; 171 letters written by Homer Sackett Curtiss to members of his family during his Civil War service in the 2nd Connecticut Volunteer Regiment, Heavy Artillery; papers of George Panton, loyalist, of New York, containing letters from Daniel Batwell, Thomas Bradbury Chandler, other loyalist Anglican ministers who escaped to England during the Revolution, and others interested in the Church of England in America; 35 letters and documents (1779-1804) by and relating to Nathanael Greene; correspondence, deeds, and tax receipts, relating to Joel Barlow and the Ohio Company; 2 volumes of letters and papers by François Alexandre-Frederick La Rochefoucauld Liancourt; correspondence and writings of Seth Reynolds; and diaries of Alfred Brammer, English workman.

The records consist of material relating to the study of the Lee plantation conducted by the Mabel Brady Garvan Institute of American Arts and Crafts at Yale. Included are the Stratford survey report, financial records, background materials, correspondence, and subject and administrative files.

The collection comprises legal manuscripts relating to church and state affairs of the Mexican state of Puebla.

The collection consists of a variety of documents from Jewish communities in Italy, mainly in the northern regions of Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy and Veneto. The documents include records of Jewish communal organizations, correspondence of rabbis and community leaders, legal decisions, and liturgy. There are also official notices and rulings from various Italian authorities pertaining to the Jewish community. A portion of the documents in this collection relate to the emancipation of the Jews of Italy following Napoleon's conquest. Most of the documents are entirely hand-written, but some are printed or written on printed forms or letter-heads.

A collection of pamphlets from African, South American, Latin American, Asian, European, and North American countries which include material relating to politics, economics, social conditions, agriculture, legal topics, religious activities, history, government operations, education, and other areas. The collection is particularly strong in the area of African materials, with several nations represented.

This collection consists of documents, manuscripts and pamphlets related to the history, culture and government of the Department Haute-Loire in France and to the city of Puy.

The major figure in these papers is Russell G. Pruden who is represented by a war diary (1918-1919) and correspondence, largely from friends from Yale and the 27th U.S. Aero Squadron in which he served during World War I. His diary contains many photographs, a history of his squadron and other memorabilia. Also in the papers are fourteen letters written to his grandfather, Joseph S. Pruden by D.B. Thompson of Columbus, Georgia, on financial matters. A small manuscripts collection is included in the papers and contains one eighteenth century and two nineteenth century travel diaries, as well as documents and letters signed by John Quincy Adams, Horace Greeley, Andrew Jackson, James Monroe and kings Charles IX and Louis XVI of France.

A collection of correspondence; government documents, including reports, and decrees; church documents;writings; and published illustrated material from Central America (Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama) on civil, military, economic, religious, political, linguistic and social topics.

Manuscripts in the Albi Rosenthal Collection of Monteverdi and the Birth of Opera consist of letters, writings, and music relating to Monteverdi and others involved in the creation of opera in seventeenth-century Italy. Letters of Monteverdi collaborators Claudio Achillini, Jacopo Peri, Ottavio Rinuccini, and other musicians and writers, addressed to third parties or unidentified recipients, concern Monteverdi's music and other music subjects. Other materials include a volume of holograph music by Alessandro Capece and two manuscripts by unidentified writers giving contempory accounts of music performed in seventeenth-century Urbino. Also present are letters of twentieth-century composers Paul Hindemith, Vincent d'Indy, and Gian Francesco Malipiero, concerning Monteverdi's music. Some items are accompanied by notes of former owners, vendor descriptions, transcriptions, or translations, some possibly by French musicologist Henry Prunières.

Collection of 28 letters and other documents, many written to John Pym and all concerned with military activities of the Parliamentary army during the English Civil War. Numerous writers request financial assistance, food, clothing, and arms for their soldiers, including Alexander Carew, who asks for money and arms to combat an uprising in Cornwall; Sir William Balfour, who requests back pay for his services as commissary and captain of a troop in Ireland and requests two months' advance for his soldiers, or else they will be unable to subsist; and William Jephson, who begs Pym to be as active for him in Parliament as his soldiers have been on the field, and who are now in rags without enough food to eat. Other letters report on threats of armed uprisings and on the movements of King Charles I as well as the movements of Queen Henrietta Maria at The Hague.

The papers detail the personal lives and professional careers of several generations and family lines of the Baldwin family. The legal, political, and business activities of family members in Connecticut, New York, and elsewhere are documented. Major topics include: family, women, law, education, Connecticut and New York politics and government, New Haven, Connecticut, and Yale University.
