Detailed family correspondence, writings, and collected material document the life and work of a single woman missionary in South China. Abbie G. Sanderson was an American Baptist missionary in South China from 1918 to 1937 and 1946 to 1953. She later taught at a girls' school in Sendai, Japan, and retired in 1959.

The papers document the Steward's missionary work and personal lives, detailing their daily activities and political and social conditions in China. Albert Newton Steward (1897-1959) and Celia Belle Speak Steward (1897-1992) were stationed in Nanking, China as educational missionaries under the Methodist Board of Missions. Albert taught botany at the University of Nanking. During World War II, Albert was interned at Chapei Camp, Shanghai from 1943-1945. In 1951, Albert became curator of the Herbarium and professor at Oregon State College.

Detailed correspondence, writings, collected material, diaries, and photographs document the life and work of Albert Dewey and his family in Turkey. Albert Dewey was an American medical missionary serving under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in Gaziantep (Aintab), Turkey from 1919 to 1959.

Correspondence, writings, pamphlets, notes, and other records document the activities of Alice Hageman, a social activist, attorney, and Presbyterian minister.

This collection documents the work of Alvah Hovey (1820-1903) who taught at Newton Theological Institution in Newton Centre, Massachusetts from 1849 to 1903 and was President of the Institution from 1868-1898.

This collection documents the work of Alva I. Cox, Jr., an independent film maker whose work chronicled the civil rights movement, human rights struggles, and ecumenical Christianity both nationally and globally. The films, slides, pictures, audio cassettes, and paperwork of the Cox collection have been organized by topic. Of particular note are the materials related to Cox's film "Kent State: May 1970." The film, cuts, paperwork, and other materials regarding Kent State complement the notebooks of Peter Davies with whom Cox worked in the making of his Kent State film. The Davies notebooks are held in the Yale University Library Manuscripts and Archives Kent State Collection. Al Cox served for sixteen years as a staff member of the National Council of Churches in training and communications. After leaving the Council in 1967 to engage in freelance film work, he wrote more than thirty-five television scripts for the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS). He also served as a communication consultant to various community organizations, labor unions, minority business enterprises, and church groups. Cox received an STM degree from Yale Divinity School in Contemporary Theology.

The American Lutheran Church Women in World Mission Oral History Project, and its continuation, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Women in Global Mission Oral History document the work of women missionaries serving under these church bodies (or predecessor bodies) from 1921-1991. This collection contains oral history transcripts of Lutheran women missionaries.

Reports, correspondence, photographs, and collected material document the history of the American School Kikungshan and its graduates. The American School Kikungshan was a school for missionary children established by the Lutheran missions in China. The American School Kikungshan Association is the alumni/ae association of the school.

Correspondence, reports, and other collected material document the development of the Anglican Church of Congo, or Province de L'Eglise Anglicane Du Congo, which grew out of the Church Missionary Society work in Uganda, was part of the Province of Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, and Zaire, and then was established as a separate entity in 1992. These records were photocopied or scanned in the Congo or Uganda and sent to the Yale Divinity Library for safekeeping,.

This collection documents the life and work of Anna Lane Wilson and Stanley Wilson, who were missionaries in China from 1917 to 1949, primarily serving at Yenching University. Of particular note are Anna Wilson's letters to family in the United States and journals document her voyage to China, missionary life, Chinese customs and celebrations, dress, architecture, the flu epidemic, climate, and political events.

The bulk of the papers relate to Brown's activities in the Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, and with the ecumenical and world missionary movements. Of special interest are Brown's travel diaries of tours of China and the Far East, 1901-1902 and 1909. Arthur Judson Brown was a Presbyterian clergyman, author and pioneer in the ecumenical and world missionary movements of the 20th century. The positions he held included administrative secretary of the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions (1895-1929), charter trustee of the Church Peace Union (1914), organizer of several World War I relief committees, editor of Missionary Review of the World (1930), vice-president of the International World Alliance of Presbyterian and Reformed Churches (1933-1937).

Minutes, correspondence, printed material, and administrative records document the creation of the AWI and its development into an organization led primarily by Asian women. The archives also contain documentation related to the Asian women's colleges that were members of the AWI. The Asian Women's Institute was created in 1975 as a catalyst organization motivating Christian colleges for women in Asia to focus attention and resources on the major needs of women in their respective countries and to build a cooperative network among the thirteen member institutions. For many years the AWI had a New York office as well as an international office, but after the early 1990s the majority of its activities were handled through the international office.

The Associate Board of the Women's Christian College, Madras, was the American governing body of the College, which was founded in 1915 in Chennai (Madras), India, as a joint venture of several British and American mission boards.

The Association for Case Teaching was established in 1978 to promote the use of case studies for improving the quality of theological teaching. The "case method" is a means of participatory and dialogical teaching and learning by group discussion of actual events. ACT was a professional association of college and seminary faculty members, pastors, denominational and ecumenical staff persons, lay leaders, church professionals and other interested persons who utilized the methodology of "case teaching" in their educational and training roles. Its membership included individuals and institutions from throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Africa and Asia.

Correspondence and organizational records document the work of the Association of Professors and Researchers in Religious Education and its predecessor organization from 1963 to 1995. The Association of Professors and Researchers in Religious Education grew out of the Professors and Research Section of the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of Churches. The group decided to move in the direction of a separate autonomous society that would become more ecumenical and interfaith.

The papers document the history of the APRRE from 1995 to 2004, when the organization merged with the Religious Education Association. They are an addition and accession for Record Group 154, which covered the years from the founding of the organization in 1970 to 1995, with pre-APRRE documents dating back to 1963. There is some overlap with a few records from 1993 and 1994. Included are records of the Executive Committee, annual business meetings, as well as correspondence, publications and membership directories.

Letters and diaries document Long's YMCA work in Tianjin (Tientsin) and Shenyang (Mukden) and shed light on the political situation in China during the 1920s. Austin O. Long was a YMCA worker in Tianjin (Tientsin), China from 1919 to 1923 and in Shenyang (Mukden), Manchuria from 1924 to 1928.

The Backus Historical Society Records, 1853-1961, are primarily records of administration and documentation of library accessions. In addition, there is a group of material identified as Collected Papers, although there is no record to verify provenance of these manuscripts.

The papers document various aspects of the lives of brothers David Nelson Beach and Harlan Page Beach, including their student days at Yale (1868-1878), Harlan's work in North China (1883-1890), and David's work as a clergyman and with the Anti-Saloon League while in Cambridge, Minneapolis and Denver. David Nelson Beach, 1848-1926, was a prominent Congregational clergyman in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Denver, Colorado and was active in temperance reform. He was president of Bangor Theological Seminary from 1903-1921. Harlan Page Beach, 1854-1933, was a missionary to China under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) from 1883-1890. He was professor of missions at Yale Divinity School from 1905-1921 and librarian of Yale's Day Missions Library from 1911-1925.

The collection chronicles the life and work of Benjamin Severance Winchester, who began serving as a Congregationalist minister and religious educator in 1897 and was active into the 1930s. During his career Winchester lived and worked in Washington, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, and Connecticut. Most of the collection details religious education curriculum in various fields, including sexual education, race relations education, Prohibition education, and peace education. Correspondence, curriculum, meeting minutes, and reports stem from Winchester's work with multiple organizations, including the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America and the International Council of Religious Education.

These are the official archives of Berkeley Divinity School, a seminary of the Episcopal Church, which affiliated with Yale Divinity School in 1971.

These papers document Bernard Read's work as a scientist in China from 1909 to 1949, as well as the life of his family in China and his internment during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai, 1941-1945. Bernard Read was not directly engaged by a missionary agency but spent the first part of his career in China at the Peking Union Medical College, a union venture related to various mission agencies. Read left the Peking Union Medical College due to disagreements with its leaders, and went to work for the Henry Lester Institute, an organization financed by an American businessman in Shanghai.

The records provide valuable documentation of an indigenous program of the church in China during the years 1939 to 1950. The correspondence and writings of Archie R. Crouch, English-language secretary of the Department, 1944-1946, provide interesting insight into the experiences of a Western missionary serving under Chinese leadership. The Border Service Department was the first missionary outreach effort of the Chinese Church. The peoples among whom the Border Service Department worked were known as the Kiang or Ch'iang, Chiarong or Gia-rung, Lolos or Nosus, and Miaos. Fields of work were western Sichuan (Szechuan) (Lifan), Sikong and Yunnan.

These papers include correspondence, sermons, writings, and other documentation of the life and work of Bradford Edward Ableson, a Yale Divinity School graduate, Captain in the Chaplain Corps of the U.S. Navy, and clergyman. A prominent chaplain with a distinguished 25-year naval career, Captain Ableson provided combat ministry with Marines during Operation Desert Storm in the first Gulf War. From 1996 to 1999, he assumed Presidential Service duties as the Chaplain at Camp David, Maryland during the Clinton Administration. In 2004, he was promoted to the rank of Navy captain and assumed responsibilities as Command Chaplain of the U.S. Strategic Command.

J. Homer and Minnie Bright, their son J. Calvin Bright, and his wife Harriet Bright, were American missionaries in China from 1911 to 1951, serving under the Church of the Brethren mission. The elder Brights served in Shao Yang and Ping Ting, Shansi province. J. Calvin and Harriet Bright served in Chengdu, Sichuan (Chengtu, Szechwan) province. This record group also contains material related to Daniel and Jane Dye, who taught at the West China Union University in Chengdu (Chengtu). J. Calvin and Harriet Bright were Church of the Brethren ministers in Indiana and Illinois after 1951.

The papers document the work of the Student Young Men's Christian Association primarily during the period when Bruce Maguire served as the Executive Secretary, 1955-1970. They provide insight into the activities and thought of American college students during this turbulent era and provide detailed information about the operations and policy of the Student YMCA as it sought to define its role in a changing society. Bruce Maguire was involved in student work for the YMCA from 1942 to 1971. From 1955-1970 he was Executive Secretary in the Student Department and National Student Council of YMCAs.

Correspondence, writings, and research materials by and about Cai Yongchun (Ts'ai Yung-ch'un) (1904-1983), provide insight into the life and work of a Chinese scholar, educator, and theologian, and into conditions in China during the Cultural Revolution.

This collection contains church bulletins, brochures, event notices, newletters, fans, and other ephemera documenting urban churches in America,primarily dating from 2000-2004. These materials shed light on the weekly activities of churches, their pastors and leaders, worship services, and outreach efforts. They provide a fascinating snapshot of religion in urban America.

The papers document two generations of Baptist missionary effort in South China. Extensive biographical and autobiographical material gives insight into the personal lives of the Campbells. Conditions in China during World War II are reflected in the letters of Louise and Dorothy Campbell. The Campbells were a family of missionaries in China. George Campbell and his wife, Jennie Wortman Campbell served in South China (1887-1916). Four of their eight children continued missionary efforts. Louise Campbell, principal of the Kwong Yit Girls' School, Meihsien, Guangdong (Kwangtung) Province, worked for 40 years among the Hakka tribespeople, as did her sister, Margaret Larue Campbell Burket and Margaret's husband, Everett S. Burket from 1916-1946. Dorothy McBride Campbell served in China from 1926-1944, as did David Miles Campbell from 1926-1942.

This collection documents the history and operations of Campus Ministry Advancement, an organization incorporated in Ohio in 1967 to support Christian ministries in higher education. Legal documents, minutes, correspondence, financial records, and tax records are included.

The collection traces the operations of the Campus Ministry Women organization from its founding in 1974 until its disbanding in 1996.

Regular and substantive correspondence as well as writings and biographical information provide an excellent picture of the lives and work of the Wahls. Carl and Elisabeth Wahl served as missionaries in China under the Evanglical Church. They were first stationed in Shenzhou (Shenchow) and later in Tongren, Guizhou (Tungjen, Kweichow Province) (now Guizhou) at the Ming Teh Boys' School. Following Carl's untimely death in 1934, Elisabeth returned to China as a teaching missionary until forced to leave by the Sino-Japanese war.

Letters and collected material document the work of the Presbyterian Church in Shandong (Shantung) Province, China from 1869 to the 1940s. Carroll and Helen Yerkes were American Presbyterian missionaries in Shandong (Shantung) Province from 1904 to 1925. The parents of Helen Nevius Eckard Yerkes were Presbyterian missionaries stationed in Chefoo from 1869 to 1874.

The papers consist primarily of printed pamphlets and sermons. The Catholic Apostolic Church was an eschatologically oriented group which split from the Church of England in the early 19th century.

These are the official archives of the Central Asia Fellowship, which was established in 1989 by Christian mission organizations, churches, and individuals coming together to form a network and a resource organization in order to reach Tibetan Buddhist peoples in Bhutan, China, the Commonwealth of Independent States (Russian republics), India, Mongolia, and Nepal. Portions of the archives are restricted due to security concerns.

Charles and Joy Sheffey were American Methodist medical missionaries who served in Wembo Nyama, Belgian Congo (now Democratic Republic of the Congo) between 1922 and 1944. Letters, journals, and writings of Charles and Joy Sheffey document their medical work and record their reactions to the culture and environment they encountered in Africa.

Correspondence, diaries, and writings document the life and work of Charles Cutler Torrey, Biblical scholar and archaeologist who taught Semitic languages at Andover Theological Seminary (1892–1900) and Yale University (1900–1932).

More than 1500 manuscript sermons and other writings document Hall's work as a clergyman. Charles Henry Hall (1820-1895) was an Episcopal clergyman in New York, South Carolina, and Washington D.C.

The collection documents Brown's long and active career as a Congregational minister, Dean of Yale Divinity School and author. Prominent correspondents include William Lyon Phelps, Washington Gladden, Booker T. Washington, Henry Sloane Coffin, Herbert Hoover, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., John R. Mott, William H. Taft, Theodore Roosevelt and Luther A. Weigle. Charles Reynolds Brown was born in Bethany, West Virginia on October 1, 1862. He was educated at the University of Iowa and Boston University, and received several honorary degrees. He was a prominent Protestant clergyman in Congregational churches across the United States, Dean of Yale Divinity School (1911-1928) and an author. He served as Moderator of the National Council of Congregational Churches and as Chairman of the Congregational Education Society. He died on November 28, 1950.

The collection consists of correspondence, writings, and printed material dating from 1908 to 1973, relating to Erickson's personal life and a number of aspects of Albanian history during this period. Letters document the Ericksons' journey to and life in Albania, and interactions with statesmen, presidents, senators and others regarding Albania's political situation. Charles Telford Erickson was born in Galesburg, Illinois in 1867. He served as a Congregational minister before and after his missionary service in Albania, which began in 1908. Erickson served for 12 years under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and 14 years independently. From 1920 to 1921, he was Special Commissioner for Albania to the U.S. and from 1922 to 1923, he assisted American Legation staff in Albania. Following retirement, Erickson traveled widely, promoting the World Council of Churches and the International Missionary Council, and as a spokesman for Albania.

This record group documents Ranson's mission and ecumenical work, particularly providing insight on the development and operations of the International Missionary Council and Theological Education Fund. His work as a theological educator and administrator, and his latter years in a Congregational pastorate are also documented. Ranson served as an Irish Methodist missionary in South India, General Secretary of the International Missionary Council, Director of the Theological Education Fund and Dean of the Drew University Theological School.

Correspondence, writings, and collected material in the Charlotte B. DeForest Papers document her work in women's higher education in Japan, her literary efforts to translate Japanese poetry and children's books, and her work with Japanese-Americans. Charlotte Burgis DeForest was the daughter of ABCFM missionaries to Japan and a graduate of Smith College. She was a missionary educator in Japan from 1903 to 1940, serving on the faculty and as president of Kobe College. During World War II she was involved in work with Japanese-American detainees.

The papers consist primarily of the sermons from Booth's pastoral career in South Coventry, Connecticut from 1815 to 1844.

Letters, writings, collected material, and photos document religious work and political conditions in South China from 1905 to 1929. Chester Garfield and Phebe Meeker Fuson were American Presbyterian missionaries in South China from 1905 to 1929. Chester Fuson taught at Canton Christian College (later Lingnan University) from 1905 to 1917. Thereafter he was an administrator and educator for the South China Mission of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

Controversial tracts written and illustrated in comic book format by Jack T. Chick since the early 1960s document a fringe element of American Christian fundamentalism and provide valuable insight into the reaction of evangelicalism to cultural upheavals in America society.

This collection contains documentation of schools for missionary children in China and the alumni associations of the schools. Records of the Kuling American School, North China American School, and Peking American School are included in this record group. For documentation of the Shanghai American School and American School Kikungshan, see separate record groups, RG 132 and RG 164.

The China Records Project Miscellaneous Personal Papers Collection is an open collection. It currently contains material from more than 325 individuals, primarily Protestant missionaries to China. The time period covered is approximately from 1834 to 1998. The China Records Project was initiated by the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A in 1968. The aim of the project was to insure the preservation of the personal records of former missionaries to China and to provide a central repository where these papers would be available to historians. The Yale Divinity School Library was chosen as this central repository in 1969 and has continued to solicit and accept China-related papers since that time.

The papers, though quite fragmentary, represent the most complete documentation available for the history of the Chinese Students' Christian Association, and provide a skeletal outline of its activities, policies and personnel. This collection is a noteworthy supplement to other record groups at the Divinity Library that document religious work among college and university students. The Chinese Students' Christian Association was organized in 1909 by four students from the universities of Yale, Columbia, Harvard and Michigan. The purpose of the Association was to foster Christian morals and friendships, and to unite Chinese Christian students living in American society. The Association provided practical services to Chinese students who were arriving from China, going to China or Europe, looking for homes or employment, needing to make purchases, or in need of other assistance.

These are the official archives of the Christian Conference of Asia, a regional ecumenical organization representing church councils and denominations in Australia, Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia, East Timor, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand. The CCA began as the East Asia Christian Conference in 1957 and changed its name to Christian Conference of Asia in 1973.

These papers represent the source materials gathered by Breman while preparing her dissertation, "The Association of Evangelicals in Africa: Its History, Organization, Members, Projects, External Relations, and Message", which was published in 1996. More than 8,000 photocopies from documents in the offices of the Association of Evangelicals in Africa in Nairobi, Kenya are supplemented by materials related to Dr. Tokunboh Adeyemo and Dr. Byang H. Kato. Christina Maria Breman was a missionary for the Africa Inland Mission International (AIM) who was forced by ill health to return to the Netherlands. There she completed a Ph. D. at the Theological Deparment of the University of Utrecht under missiology Dr. Jan A. B. Jongeneel.

Extensive reports, minutes, publications, photographs, scrapbooks, etc. document the history of The Church of the Redeemer, United Church of Christ (New Haven, Conn).

The collection consists of correspondence, writings, and source material related almost entirely to Shedd's professional involvement in religious work among college and university students. Clarence Prouty Shedd received the B.A. degree in 1909 and the M.A. degree in 1914, both from Clark University, and earned a B.D. in 1925 and a Ph.D. in 1932 from Yale University. He taught in the fields of Christian methods and religion in higher education at Yale University from 1923 to 1955.

These papers document the "What is a Christian College?" Research Study Project conducted by the Commission on Christian Higher Education of the Association of American Colleges, in association with the National Council of Churches. The papers include workshop information, summaries of workshop results, research study progress reports from participating colleges, manuscripts of book chapters intended for publication, and correspondence regarding the research study, workshops, and manuscripts.

The archives document the work of an organization run by women for women. They provide insight into developing concepts of the role of Christian literature and related artwork overseas. The Committee was formed in 1912 under the sponsorship of the Federation of Women's Boards of Foreign Missions. Its goal was to provide Christian literature to women and children overseas. In the first fifty years of its existence the Committee supported 27 magazines, 9 of which were originated by the Committee. Beginning in the 1940s, the Committee began to make grants for literacy projects as well. The Committee had an increasingly cooperative relationship with the Committee on World Literacy and Christian Literature (formed in 1942 by the Foreign Missions Conference of North America) and with its successor, the Intermedia Committee of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. In 1989 the Committee on Christian Literature for Women and Children ceased to exist as a separate entity and became a Standing Committee within Intermedia.

The Congregational Church Records of Record Group 56 are an open collection of primarily printed material dating from approximately 1709-1983. Records of various official bodies are encompassed by the record group as it documents churches of Congregational polity individually and in cooperation on local, state, national and international levels.

Substantive letters and detailed diary entries document Buell's daily work as a missionary, her relationships with colleagues, and her views on events in China. Constance Buell was an educational missionary in north China from 1919 to 1951, serving under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM). She taught at Kobe College in Japan from 1952 to 1958.

The Council for Ecumenical Student Christian Ministry (CESCM) was founded in 1987 to "in order to create new opportunities for involving students and campus ministries in the work to rebuild an ecumenical student Christian ministry in the United States." This record group contains material related to predecessor organizations and administrative files from CESCM from its inception in 1987 to 2000. The CESCM grew out of the National Ecumenical Student Christian Council (NESCC), which was preceeded by the National Ecumenical Student Conference (NESC) and the National Interim Committee (NIC). It has a relationship with global ecumenical student organizations through affiliate membership in the World Student Christian Federation.

This record group represents a series of addenda to the original archives of the CESCM that were received in 2000. It contains material related to predecessor organizations and administrative files from the CESCM from its inception in 1987 to its dissolution in 2009. The Council for Ecumenical Student Christian Ministry was composed of denominational staff and college/university students from the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and Presbyterian Church (USA), the United Church of Christ, and the United Methodist Church. It became an affiliate member of the World Student Christian Federation in 1995.

The Council of Church Boards of Education was a Protestant ecumenical organization created in 1911. The organization was made up of boards of education from several Protestant denominations. The intent of the organization was to promote the cause of religious education in institutions of higher education.

The archives include minutes and financial information for the Council for Higher Education Ministries' work groups: the Council for Ecumenical Student Christian Ministry, Higher Education Ministries Arena, and United Ministries in Higher Education.

These archives constitute the data, drafts, reports, and related material that resulted in the two volume report of the Danforth Study of Campus Ministries, The Church, the University, and Social Policy, which was published by Wesleyan University Press in 1969. The Danforth Study of Campus Ministries, sponsored by the Danforth Foundation beginning in 1963, was directed by Kenneth Underwood. Through questionnaires, studies, and analysis, the project documented the state of religious awareness and commitment on American university and college campuses.

Substantive letters refer to the social and political scene in the Chengdu (Chengtu) area, as well as providing a thorough account of the educational mission work of the Dyes at West China Union University. The papers include unique documentation of patterns and designs used in West China latticework, woven belts, and pottery. Drawings of hundreds of patterns and notes regarding their origin and symbolism are included. Daniel Sheets Dye taught academic courses at West China Union University in Chengdu, Sichuan (Chengtu, Szechuan Province), from 1910 to 1949, serving under the American Baptist Foreign Missionary Society. As an avocation Dye recorded and analyzed window lattice and woven belt patterns, which often had swastika designs, throughout West China. Jane Balderston went to West China in 1915, serving under the Friends Foreign Mission Association of Great Britain and Ireland. After her marriage to Daniel Dye in 191, she taught mathematics and education courses at Woman's Normal School in Chengdu (Chengtu) and West China Union University Normal School.

Letters and writings document the life and work of Daniel Webster Crofts, an American missionary serving under the China Inland Mission, primarily in Guizhou Province, China from 1895 to 1944. Detailed letters written to the Crofts children describe the evangelization and literature distribution work of Crofts and his first wife Verna Hammarén Crofts and his second wife Mabel Harlow Crofts, as well as their way of life in a rural area beset by famine, and political disruption.

Correspondence, sermons, lectures, writings, reports, slides, and collected material document the life and work of David M. Stowe, who was a top level executive for the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, the United Church Board for World Ministries, and the National Council of Church Division of Overseas Ministries. The collection includes extensive documentation of the history of the ABCFM and UCBWM that Stowe compiled in preparation for writing a history of the Boards.

Correspondence, writings, collected material, and biographical records provide valuable documentation of Beach's Yale education, his work with the YMCA in France during World War I, his ministry, his contributions to the Congregational denomination, and the work of the Connecticut Civil Rights Commission. David Nelson Beach, Jr. (1894-1990) was a clergyman in New England and Minnesota, including at First Church of Christ (Center Church) in New Haven from 1943 to 1960. He served on the Connecticut Civil Rights Commission from 1948 to 1960 and played an influential role in the denominational merger that created the United Church of Christ in 1957.

Dean and Fanny Wickes were missionaries serving in Shandong from 1912 to 1934 under the North China Mission of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Correspondence, writings, photographs, and collected material document the life and work of these missionaries who were engaged in educational and evangelistic work.

The bulk of this collection consists of research files compiled by Donald MacInnis, a prominent historian of missions in China. Correspondence, writings, collected material, and photographs gathered by MacInnis for his book China Chronicles from a Lost Time: The Min River Journals provide extensive documentation of Christian missions in Fujian province. The collection also includes correspondence, writings, and biographical documentation of MacInnis, who was a missionary in China and Taiwan and director of the China Program of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A., the Midwest China Center, and the Maryknoll China Research Program.

Letters, writings, and memorabilia document Macintosh's life and work. Douglas Clyde Macintosh was Professor of Theology at Yale from 1909 to 1942.

This collection documents the life of D.T. Niles (1908-1970) who was a Sri Lankan Methodist minister, ecumenical leader, and evangelist. Niles held several positions in ecumenical leadership including Chairman of the Youth Department of the World Council of Churches, Chairman of the World Student Christian Federation, and General Secretary for the East Asia Christian Conference. The collection include correspondence and collected materials relating to Niles' work and personal life.

Journals, correspondence, and mission station "diaries" provide thorough and detailed documentation of work at the Chilesso Station of the ABCFM in Angola from 1905 to 1962. Also of interest in the collection are Duane Waln's papers on the Ovimbundu people and their customs, Umbundu language grammars and dictionaries, writings of the Walns relating to life on Chilesso Station and biographies of the native Christians. Duane and Marian ("Peggy") Waln were American missionaries in Angola from 1929 to 1962, serving primarily at the Chilesso Station of the West Central Africa Mission of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Duane Waln was involved in mission administrative work and evangelism. Peggy Waln's major project at Chilesso Station was founding and running a school for women, which had a home economics program.

The collection is valuable for the documentation it provides concerning a New Haven area clergy family during the period 1800 to 1880. Daily events and family relationships are revealed in substantive family correspondence. Of particular interest are Samuel Dutton's notebooks from his student days at Yale. The bulk of the collection is comprised of manuscript sermons written by Aaron and Samuel Dutton during their pastorates in Guilford and New Haven. These sermons touch on topics such as slavery, the Civil War, "Millerism", temperance and immigration. The sermons span the careers of both Duttons, who were known for their abolitionist stances, and thus provide an opportunity for tracing the development of their thought over a number of years. Aaron Dutton was born in Watertown, Connecticut on May 21, 1780. He served as minister of the First Congregational Church in Guilford, Connecticut from 1806 until 1842, at which time he resigned due to the dissension in the congregation regarding his abolitionist stance. In 1843, he went to Iowa in service of the American Home Missionary Society. He died in New Haven in 1849. His son, Samuel William Southmayd Dutton was born in Guilford, Connecticut on March 14, 1814. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale in 1833, he held positions as teacher, tutor, rector, minister (North Church, New Haven, Connecticut), publisher and editor. He was a noted champion of the antislavery cause. He died in Millbury, Massachusetts in 1866.

The collection provides valuable biographical information about Dwight Lyman Moody. Correspondence includes family letters, letters of condolence on the occasions of Moody's illness and death in 1899 and the death of his wife in 1903, letters regarding anecdotes of Moody's life, and memoirs, memos and letters compiled by his granddaughter. Sermons contain notes, transcripts and published compilations of sermons. Journals, clippings and articles consist of material describing Moody and his career. Dwight Lyman Moody was born in Northfield, Massachusetts in 1837. After organizing his own mission Sunday School in 1859, he devoted his life to evangelism, leading campaigns across the United States and Great Britain. He established two schools in Northfield: Northfield Seminary for young women and Northfield Mount Hermon School for older boys. In 1887, he founded the Chigcago Evangelization Society, which operated the Bible Training School later known as the Moody Bible Institute. Moody died on December 22, 1899 in Northfield Massachusetts.

The papers document Dwight W. Edwards' work in China, particularly with the YMCA in Beijing (Peking), which was sponsored by the Princeton University Student Christian Association. The famine relief work of various organizations in China is also well documented. Edwards was a missionary in China from 1906 to 1949. He was active in YMCA work, particularly in Beijing (Peking), and in famine relief work throughout China from 1920 to 1949. Edwards held leadership positions with the China International Famine Relief Commission, United China Relief, and United Service to China, and was also associated with Yenching University in Beijing (Peking).

Substantive correspondence, photographs, and slides document the Ballous' life and work in China. Earle and Thelma Ballou were missionaries in Tianjin (Tientsin), North China, serving under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) from 1916 to 1948.

The E.C. Dahl Papers provided documentation of the life and work of a YDS graduate who was a Congregational minister. They contain correspondence, biographical materials, sermons, publications, and pastoral materials. Edward C. Dahl was ordained by the Congregational Church in 1941, and served churches in Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Wisconsin, New York, and New Hampshire. He authored numerous articles and sermons in various ministry publications, including Pulpit, Pulpit Digest, Church Educatorand Advance. He died in 1993, survived by his wife, daughter Mary and sons Christopher and Edward.

Looseleaf notebooks of sermons, prayers, and programs document Vorba's work as a Congregational minister. Edward James Vorba, a 1947 graduate of the Yale Divinity School, was a pastor at churches in Iowa, Vermont, Florida, Connecticut, New York, and Pennsylvania from 1947 to 1985.

The collection documents Robie's professional work at Andover Theological Seminary and as a Congregational minister in Greenland, New Hampshire from 1852 to 1917.

The papers primarily document Park's work as Professor of Sacred Rhetoric (1836-1847) and Professor of Christian Theology (1847 to 1881) at Andover Theological Seminary, and as editor of Bibliotheca Sacra from 1844 to 1884.

Sermons and biographical material document the life and work of a New England Congregational minister during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Edward Stevens Sanborn (1866-1945) was a Yale Divinity School graduate who served various Congregational parishes in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

The papers consist of manuscript sermons by Fitch. Eleazar T. Fitch (1791-1871) was Livingston Professor of Divinity at Yale from 1817 to 1852, in which his main duty was the supply of the College pulpit. He was Lecturer on Homiletics at the Yale Divinity School from1824 to 1861.

Letters, journals, and writings in this record group document Eli Smith's missionary work in the Middle East. Letters of his third wife, Mehitable Simpkins Butler Smith, provide valuable documentation of her ten years in the Middle East. Research materials gathered by Margaret Leavy complement the original holdings. Eli Smith, an early missionary to the Middle East serving under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, is best known for his translation of the Bible into Arabic.

The papers provide valuable documentation of the work of the American Baptist South China Mission, complementing the Foster Family papers and Campbell Family papers also located at Yale Divinity School Library. The Hildreths' experiences are representative of many American missionaries to China in the early part of this century. Substantive correspondence with family members and fellow missionaries documents their striving to reach the mission field, their initial impressions of China, family life in China, daily educational and evangelistic work, and the political unrest rampant in South China during their tenure. The intense anti-Christian movement in the mid 1920s is well documented. Ellison Hildreth served as a Baptist home missionary from 1910 until 1913. From 1913-1927, the Hildreths were American Baptist missionaries in South China. During a furlough from 1918-1919, Ellison Hildreth served with the YMCA in Siberia. From 1928-1949, he served as pastor of Federated Churches in Vermont and Connecticut.

The collection consists primarily of published books, pamphlets and articles collected by Ellsworth Eliot Sr. The annotated collected documents reflect Eliot's varied research interests, particularly the life and work of his ancestor, John Eliot, "Apostle to the Indians."

Detailed correspondence, diaries, photographs, and collected material document the life and work of a young, single woman missionary in China. Elsie Clark Krug was an American Methodist missionary in Fuzhou (Foochow) from 1912 to 1918. She taught at Hwa Nan College, then in its preliminary stages a mission-supported college for women.

Correspondence, writings, and collected material document the work of Emery W. Carlson and Elvera Teed Carlson, Lutheran missionaries serving in China from 1940 to 1949. Emery Carlson was a medical doctor who worked at the Lutheran Hospital in Xuchang, Henan (Hsuchang, Honan) province from 1941 to 1944. He was active in famine relief work 1942-1944 and in 1945 became an intelligence officer working for the Office of Strategic Services behind Japanese lines in Henan. After the war Carlson returned to the mission hospital but the family was forced to leave China in 1949 due to the Communist takeover.

Correspondence relates to Hale's roles as minister, father, educator, Secretary of the General Association of Congregational Churches and Ministers of Massachusetts, and Secretary of the Hampshire Missionary Society. Diaries contain brief daily entries describing the weather, notable activities and events, sermons written and preached, town meetings attended, marriages performed, visitors received, journeys taken and chores performed. Also included is information regarding births and deaths in Westhampton. The diaries provide fifty years of consistent and valuable documentation of the daily activities of a Congregational minister in a small New England town. Notes and memoranda reflect Hale's interest in politics, his administrative and ministerial duties, and Biblical studies. Over 1200 sermons with indexes are included. Enoch Hale, born in Coventry, Connecticut on October 28, 1753, was the brother of the famed Nathan Hale. He graduated from Yale College in 1773 and served as a Congregational clergyman in Westhampton, Massachusetts from 1778-1828. He also served as Secretary of the General Association of the Congregational Churches and Ministers of Massachusetts from 1804-1824, and was Secretary of the Hampshire Missionary Society for many years. He was involved in the educational and public interests of his community and represented Westhampton in the State Constitutional Convention of 1820. He died on January 19, 1837.

The records in this collection primarily document the ECFSA's work in relation to Namibia. The ECFSA has served as a link between Anglicans in Southern Africa and people in the United States by publishing a newsletter, issuing news releases, sponsoring public meetings, preparing and publishing special reports, sponsoring speaking and study tours for Southern Africans, raising funds to support education and provide relief in Southern Africa, and providing aid and counsel to visiting Southern Africans. The organization has encouraged its supporters to contact U.S. political leaders regarding crucial issues.

Correspondence, writings, and collected material document the Ikenberrys' work in China and the U.S. Ernest and Olivia Ikenberry were American missionaries in China from 1922-1951, serving under the Church of the Brethren. Following their return from China they served at a Church of the Brethren mission among the Navajo Indians in Lybrook, New Mexico.
