The Boswell Collection Addition constitutes a small portion of the extensive body of papers in the Beinecke Library pertaining to the Boswell family and the estate of Auchinleck from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries. The Addition primarily documents the complex administration of the debt-burdened estate of Auchinleck after the death of Sir Alexander Boswell in 1822. There are also papers relating to the careers and activities of members of the Douglas of Garallan branch of the family, along with some personal and family papers belonging to the Boswells of Auchinleck. The papers span the years 1634-1960, but the bulk of the material dates from between 1823 and 1857.
The Winthrop Family Papers are organized in two series: I. Correspondence and II. Other Papers. The papers span the dates 1635-1720, with the bulk of the material dating from between 1670 and 1710.
Correspondence and other documents signed by circa 200 members of the Académie française, 1637-1926 and undated, assembled by an unidentified collector, possibly American autograph collector Howes Norris, Jr. (1867-1938), of Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts. Most are autograph letters, signed; other contents include literary writings, legal documents, and a few documents concerning administration of the Académie française. Many are accompanied by descriptions from vendor catalogs, engraved portraits, clippings, or notes of former owners. Correspondence includes an autograph letter, signed, from Alexis de Tocqueville to Robert Walsh, consul general of the United States in Paris, 1845 June 10. Documents relating to Maurice Donnay and Albert, comte de Mun, include signatures on printed cards identified as "The autograph collection of Howes Norris, Jr."
These papers represent an important collection of source materials surrounding Charles I's expedition to Scotland in 1640 and 1641. Edward Howard, though he originally agreed with the King's decision, was also one of the twelve dissenting peers who signed a petition on 28 August 1640 outlining the popular grievances and dangers attendant on the expedition.
