Collections : [Jewish Historical Society of Greater Hartford]

The material in this collection dates from the late 1940s-1980s. During the 1940s Israel was founded, the Civil Rights movement began, and American Jews began to react to the legacy of the Holocaust. Later materials deal with the continuing Arab- Israeli conflict, issues of separation of church and state in the United States, and the emergence of hate groups and cults.

The Bess and Paul Sigel Hebrew Academy records(1940-2012; 7.5 cubic feet) documents the history of the Academy.

Most of the photographs in this collection are of Midrasha graduations. There are also some older photographs of early Jewish Education programs.

M 14 First Hebrew Ladies' Free Loan Association records (1924-1968; 0.5 cubic feet) consist of ledger books, some correspondence, some loan payment information and receipts, and a few pieces of organization documents. There are very minimal meeting notes.

The Gerald Roisman collection of Hartford County Bar Association Records (1983; 0.09 cubic feet) contains items related to the 200th anniversary of the Hartford County Bar Association.

The Hartford District, Zionist Organization of America collection (1919-1996; 1 c.f.) documents local Connecticut chapters of the Zionist Organization of America, including their reports, minutes, and activities. It also contains various publications from the ZOA.

SM 11 Henny Rosenbaum Markiewicz Simon memoir (2009; 0.03 cubic feet)cointains a memoir titled, "Am I my Brother's Keeper?: The Story of a Holocaust Survivor" by Henny Rosenbaum Markiewicz Simon.

M 31 Michael Zoosman history of Conservative movement project (1930-2007; 0.5 c.f) contains materials collected during the writing of Zoosman's thesis, "Powerhouse of Light: Connecticut Valley Region of the United Synagogue of Conserative Judaism." Includes transcripts of interviews, photographs, correspondence, book excerpts, and clippings. Thesis focuses on the history of the Conservative Judaism movement in Connecticut and Massachusetts by following its leadership through time.

Soviet Jewry

The Isadore N. Gershman papers (1942-1977; 0.2 c.f.) consists of photographs, cards, some personal and military correspondence, ollege transcripts, and a photocopied handwritten memoir.

M 17 Justin Bernheimer papers (1 c.f.; 1815-1950s) consists of one tallit, several books in Hebrew, and in German and Hebrew, and one translated note.

The Lippman family papers and photographs (1930-1967; 0.66 c.f.) consists of newspaper clippings, photographs, a typed eulogy for Henry R. Lippman, and a yahrzeit calendar for Malka Mohill. The majority of photographs are for Dora K. Lippman later in her life. The newspaper clippings are also all about Mrs. Lippman.

SM 9 Pinkes Family papers (1923-1946; 0.09 cubic feet) consists of the immigration records, marriage certificates, personal narratives, letters, and financial papers of Herman and Tobe Pinkes. Some items are in French or Russian.

M 18 Reuben Cohen papers (0.25 c.f.; 1920-2003) contain newsclippings regarding Cohen's sports exploits, some corresponcence and photographs, and a few sports programs.

The Schweitzer family photograph (1890s; 0.6 c.f.) depicts the seven Schweitzer children, Louis, Lena, Anna, Fanny, Clara, Rebecca, and Molly with their respective spouses.

M 29 Stanley M. Kessler papers (1925-2019; 0.6 c.f) contains sermons, meditations, clippings, certificates, notes, school assignments, and photographs. Also includes materials related to Beth El Temple.

This is a small collection consisting of minutes from the 1960s through 1980s, scrapbooks and a handful of other materials. Several scrapbooks, compiled and donated by Gloria Bein are included. Due to serious deterioration, these scrapbooks have been photocopied onto plain paper.

M16 Title and Hartman family papers (0.25 c.f.; 1920s-1990s) contains clippings, notes, certificates, other documents, and photographs related to members of the Title and Hartman families.
