The John Ruskin Collection contains correspondence, writings, artwork, and other material relating to the life and career of the Victorian author and art critic John Ruskin. Major correspondents include his parents, John James Ruskin and Margaret Cox Ruskin; George Allen; Edward Clayton; William Graham; Henry Jowett; Robert C. Leslie; Frederic Maynard; Susanna Miller; Sir John Naesmyth and Lady Naesmyth; Edward B. Nicholson; William Roscoe Osler; Harriette Rigbye; and Mrs. Arthur Stannard (who published as John Strange Winter). Writings include notebooks of Ruskin's juvenilia and other poems by Ruskin; autograph manuscripts of "The Mysteries of Life and its Arts" and several of his lectures; the manuscript of his autobiography, "Praeterita;" and corrected page proofs of chapters fromModern Painters and page and galley proofs of Sesame and Lilies. Artwork includes fourteen watercolors and pen and ink sketches by Ruskin. The collection also contains photographs of Ruskin; notes taken by Alexander H. M. Wedderburn at Ruskin's 1874 lectures in Oxford; and a leather postbag stamped with Ruskin's name and address.

    John Ruskin letter to Ellen Heaton, 1855 December-1855 December Box 1, Folder H.27

    Ruskin admits that time constraints mean that his letter is late and "hastily" written. He asks Heaton about the positioning of the proofs of the latest Bolton Abbey photographs and enquires after a bridge, mentioned in Heaton's last letter to him, which has apparently been built since Ruskin's last visit to the area. Ruskin asks Heaton to arrange for another two photographs to be taken, with a view from Holme Terrace. Ruskin says Heaton can return Rossetti's Francesca with the photographs but that there is no rush. [Date provided by Surtees: December 1855]

    Ruskin stresses that he is not ungrateful for Heaton's help and wishes her a merry Christmas. He explains that he cannot give Heaton the reasons for his commissioning of the Bolton photographs because it is related to the fourth volume of Modern Painters, which will not be published for at least two months. Ruskin encourages Heaton to contemplate "Dante's riddle about Rachel and Matilda" and gives her hints about how she might "make it out." Ruskin recommends H.F. Cary's translation of Dante over that of C.B. Cayley. Ruskin says that he is delighted that Heaton's friends like Rossetti's Francesca and that Rossetti and that Rossetti will be too. Ruskin gives further instructions regarding the photographing of Bolton Abbey. [Date provided by Surtees: 23 December 1855]

        Letter to Thomas Goff Lupton, 1845-1873 Box 1, Folder 60

        Addressed to Lupton at Russell Square. Dated "27th December." Ruskin remarks that his friend, "Mr Tyrwhitt of Christchurch, Oxford, is one of my best helpers in all projects relating to the diffusion of art feeling among the young men at this university..." He describes Tyrwhitt's desire to learn how to mezzotint, and asks Lupton to give him a few lessons. Ruskin acknowledges that he is "asking what is out of your way," but he notes that it is certainly uncommon for "Tutors of Oxford should wish to learn the severe work of art." He closes, "Always affectionately yours, J Ruskin."

        A brief message from Ruskin asking Lupton to send him back his box so he can send Lupton another plate in it. He also asks Lupton to order "another steal of same size" and says that he will send the "tracing to be rolled off on it speedily."
