This series is divided into six sections: "Certificates," "Correspondence," "Notes," "Printed Matter," "Records," and "Legal Documents." "Correspondence" is generally with people related to Brewer who are interested in the Brewer Genealogy. "Notes" consists of material collected by Brewer from various sources. Most of the material in "Notes" was added to the material in three volumes entitled "Records." The "Records form a fairly complete genealogical history of the Brewer family in America. Most of the "Legal Documents" are copies of family wills. The material in this series is arranged alphabetically within each section.

Brewer, William Henry, 1828-1910
Correspondence, diaries, notebooks, lectures, articles, essays, genealogical materials, photographs and other papers of William Henry Brewer, scientist, teacher, and writer. The collection spans Brewer's entire career including his student days at the Yale Analytical Laboratory, his work with the California State Geological Survey, his various teaching positions in California, New York and at Yale and all his other many and varied activities. Of special and specific interest are Brewer's letters to members of his family which chronicle his many trips and scientific expeditions, his correspondence with his colleagues, and the methodical and voluminous notes and diaries he kept on virtually everything he did or encountered.

This series is divided into three sections: "General Correspondence," "Correspondence of Others," and "Family Correspondence." "General Correspondence" is arranged alphabetically by the name of the writer of the letter, by the name of an organization, or by topic. Topics not previously mentioned include "The Arctic Club and Arctic Exploration" and "California Petroleum Controversy." Letters written by William Henry Brewer are filed under the name of the person to whom the letter was addressed.
