A summary of the military situation in America, with details of Washington's campaign plans. This letter was written in duplicate and placed in the hands of couriers who were to wait at Cape Henry, Virginia, and Point Judith, Rhode Island, to divert Rochambeau to New York. This copy is the one sent to Point Judith, which was actually delivered to Rochambeau. Rochambeau's autograph note states, (translated), "I did not receive this letter at Rhode Island until several days after my arrival, when the enemy had concentrated in force at New York after the capture of Charleston."
