Boxes 1-15 hold Series I, Writings, which is divided into four sections, Books, Drama, Edited Works, and Shorter Works. The first section, Books, is arranged alphabetically by title and also includes drafts of stories which were later published as chapters of novels. Drama, Edited Works, and Shorter Works are also arranged alphabetically by title. Material within each title is placed in the following order: notes, drafts, galleys, printed versions, translations, and papers, which include contracts and correspondence about each work. Cross- references for variant manuscript titles are made and untitled manuscripts are filed at the end of each subseries. Two folders of general notes are found at the end of the series.
