Largely comprised of correspondence between 1880 and 1920, the series documents Helen Hay and Payne Whitney and immediate family members. The bulk of the series is related to Helen Hay, particularly her literary career. There are letters she received about her published writings, as well as letters exchanged with other writers about their own writing, in which they solicited her counsel. There are also examples of her writings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Payne Whitney's files provide only partial documentation of his multifaceted personal and professional lives. The limited correspondence of John M. Hay is largely focused on personal matters; the majority of his papers are at Brown University.
