The acquisition consists of Ethan Allen Hitchcock correspondence, chiefly letters to Commissioner of Indian Affairs Carey A. Harris. The correspondence relates to the removal of Indians from Missouri Territory, treaties, conflicts between the military and the Office of Indian Affairs, appropriations by Congress, delay in remittances and inaccurate accounts, padded muster rolls, transportation of goods, and the possible transfer of Hitchcock.

The acquisition consists of letters from Ethan Allen Hitchcock to John Canfield Spencer in 1842, when Hitchcock was stationed at Fort Wayne, Indiana. The correspondence relates to the ill treatment of Indians by soldiers, and justification of the Cherokee claims of insufficient rations and funds. In addition Hitchcock advises the abandonment of Fort Wayne as it has outlived its usefulness.
