St. Kiven and the Gentle Kathleen : manuscript, 1835-1845 Box 1, Folder 12

Comprises the verse of Thomas Moore's "By That Lake, Whose Gloomy Shore" from vol. 4 of his Irish Melodies, illustrated by original drawings by Lear. The verse describes the story of Saint Kevin (of Glendalough?) who responds to the love of his devoted admirer only after he has cruelly cast her to her death. The sheets are numbered 1-9; sheet 5 is lacking.

W.H. Auden letter to Simon Nowell-Smith, 1939 January 3- Box 1, Folder 11

Auden thanks Nowell-Smith for the proofs of Auden's poem, "Edward Lear," for publication in the March 25, 1939, issue of the Times Literary Supplement (Spring Books supplement). Auden requests that the line "his welcome was prodigious: a flower took his hat" be changed to read "How prodigious the welcome was: flowers took his hat." The correction was not made.
