Series IV, Art, includes works of art by Black artists as well as works by non-Black artists depicting Black subjects. Works include an oil painting of four African American men by Lady Bird Cleveland; a design for Carl Van Vechten's bathroom and a drawing to advertise Nigger Heaven by Aaron Douglas; caricatures of W. C. Handy and Walter White by Miguel Covarrubias; costume design renderings by Nat Karson for the New York Federal Theatre Project production of MacBeth with an all-Black cast; Edward Knight Kauffer's sketches for an unpublished edition of Nigger Heaven; numerous holiday-themed artworks by Richard Bruce Nugent; and ten lithographs by Prentiss Taylor. Additional artists represented in a variety of media include Elwyn Chamberlain, Currier and Ives, Geoffrey Holder, Zell Ingram, Charles Sebree, Kristians Tonny, and Hale Woodruff. Works by unidentified artists, binding samples for Nigger Heaven, and art reproductions are also included in the series.
