Bellows children, 1799, Rockingham, VT., slate. This small stone shows the final phase of the ornammental rural style in New England which replaced the seen world with a conceptual one made up of almost wholly geometric forms. Notice, for example, how the bodies are formed of half-circles and ornamented with a simple checkboard design while the hair is formed of links and the circular head rests upon the trunk without the support of a neck which in representational art would be taken for granted.
