Joseph Hickox stone, 1725, Durham, CT, redstone 22 3/4 x 26 1/4. Between 1725 and 1730 highly ornamented stone begin to appear in the burial grounds of the Connecticut Valley. This example shows the coil volute border panel which may have been derived from the New london carvers or simplified from Boston examples. The winged death's head was almost certainly taken from a Boston stone. Similar stones may be found throughot the Connecticut Valley after 1730.
